Shade Technician

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is as follows:

The Shade Technician is responsible for viscosity adjustments and drawdowns of all batches that are being manufactured. The Shade Technician packages finished material by filling proper containers for storage in the Warehouse or for shipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

SHADE

1. Makes drawdowns and runs viscosities (adjusts viscosities when needed)
2. Sets up batches when required
3. Tints required batches
4. Product products per schedule and in accordance with batch-ticket instructions

FILLING

1. Provides containers as needed from the storage area
2. Checks containers to be filled for cleanliness and prepares other containers for filling
3. Sets up filling pan and utilizes different straining media as required
4. Loads and unloads incoming or outgoing materials when necessary
5. Operates, assembles, disassembles, and cleans filter machines, Finex, and other filling machines
6. Skids all filled materials for forklift handling
7. Takes retains as instructed and identifies them
8. Washes filling pans, tanks, and other machinery within the department
9.  Assists in handling of other raw materials required in the department

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Operates pumps, meters, agitators, and tanks as required
2. Handles all required raw material according to PPE requirements
3. Maintains department records in an orderly condition
4. Assists in taking department inventories when directed
5. Always works in a safe and efficient manner that ensures quality
6. Properly documents raw material inputs and time according to batch-ticket requirements
7. Follows company regulations with respect to safety, maintenance, and repair of tools and equipmnent and general housekeeping, and keeps area clean at all times
8. Uses materials, equipment, and facilities in an efficient and conscientious manner according to proper procedures
9. Works assigned hours and overtime as required
10. Suggests to Shift Lead Person improvements in job methods, equipment, or procedures
11. Follows H.M.I.S. and PPE Safety Program
12. Assists in other departments as required
13. Performs duties as required by Lead Person or Supervisor

Essential Functions

1. Continuous standing or walking for six (6) hours per day
2. Frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 100 pounds of weight
3. Frequent bending, twisting, stooping, and repetitive motion
4. Enduring temperatures up to 105 F. during summer months
5. Occasional requirement to utilize half-face respirator
6. Occasional operation of forklift and drum dolly equipment

• Reading and writing on batch-tickets

Requirements

1. Demonstrated ability to properly operate assigned equipment in accordance with the batch-ticket instructions, PSMs, and other procedures
2. Demonstrated quality performance of four (4) or less errors in preceding 12 months.  “Error” is defined as any operator mistake or deviation from the original batch-ticket or adjustment instruction (hit) that may or may not result in additional correction, batch “Hold”, or batch being sludged.  If a Batchmaker makes five (5) or more errors in any succeeding rolling period, he will be subject to disciplinary action (written warning).
3. Demonstrated safety performance to include zero reportable accidents within the preceding twelve (12) month rolling period.
4. Documented attendance of no more than forty-eight (48) hours missed in the preceding twelve (12) month rolling period.
5. Documented overall performance rating of “Good” or better for the preceding two (2) performance evaluations
6. Attend, participate, and successfully pass the Batchmaker 101 training class by scoring a 65% or higher final grade on the exam.  An employee who doesn’t receive a passing grade can retake the exam after consultation with the Director of Operations and at his final discretion.  If an employee is not able to pass the exam on the second attempt, the employee will not be eligible for Matchmaker recognition and will be given an opportunity to transfer to another position, if available.
