The Opportunity

The Director, Labor Relations is key leadership role responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to the Labor Relations Department, ensuring the seamless alignment of operations within business. This role is accountable for driving high-level performance and operational excellence, fostering a culture of collaboration, and promoting best practices in labor relations. The Director will develop and execute business strategies that enhance customer satisfaction, expand market opportunities, and strengthen client relationships. In addition, this position will lead the effort in marketing and business development initiatives, ensuring the company’s labor relations services are recognized as industry leading. By effectively communicating corporate goals, philosophy, and culture, the Director, Labor Relations will mentor and develop a high-performing team, ensuring long-term retention and growth while navigating complex labor issues and contributing to the organization’s success.

 

 

What You Will Do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the activities of the Labor Relations Division, ensuring effective operations and client satisfaction.
  • Drive team growth by recognizing the need for additional headcount and developing strategies to capitalize on opportunities with existing clients as well as new growth prospects.
  • Initiate the response process with the Marketing Team for RFPs, contract amendments, and take ultimate responsibility for ensuring timely and accurate deliverables, driving business development efforts and aligning with client needs and expectations.
  • Provide expert advice to clients on a wide range of labor relations issues, including labor laws, project labor agreements, grievances, misclassifications, and scope of work interpretations.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, contractors, and trade organizations, ensuring clients receive strategic guidance on labor-related matters.
  • Serve as a senior advisor and liaison to clients, on escalated and complex labor issues, providing insights and recommendations, and guiding them through negotiations or labor disputes.
  • Track contract work in progress, monitor contract budgets, and proactively notify the team of any contract-related issues to ensure timely resolution and alignment with client expectations.
  • Conduct training and seminars to educate clients, stakeholders, and employees on labor relations practices, legal considerations, and best practices for compliance.
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and forums, positioning yourself as a thought leader and fostering relationships that enhance the company’s visibility and influence in the labor relations space.
  • Track industry trends and monitor changes in labor laws and regulations, proactively advising clients on the strategic implications for their business operations.
  • Maintain billability at minimum of 40%.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

The person manages the Labor Relations Team.   

 

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, labor relations or related field of study or equivalent work experience. 
  • 10+ years' experience in a labor relations lead or management position
  • 5+ years performing marketing duties in support of Labor Compliance/PLA marketing initiatives
  • Extensive understanding of Labor Compliance policies, procedures, and practices
  • Extensive understanding of Project Labor Agreements policies, procedures and practice
  • In depth understanding of the California Labor Code pertaining to Public Works Projects
  • Experience analyzing documents using critical thinking
  • Ability to effectively work with various government agencies and union organizations
  • Develops and maintains strategic local/regional relationships including ability to present to large groups of people
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently and complete tasks with little or no supervision
  • Must be detail-oriented
