Summary

Under the general direction of the Grounds Superintendent, the Irrigation Technician installs, maintains and manages the irrigation systems, controllers and backflow devices in a safe manner. Job requires well developed verbal and writing skills to present and exchange technical information and specifications with management, staff, co-workers, sub-contractors, and outside vendors. Performs work as designated essential personnel. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Operates, maintains and repairs existing irrigation systems to ensure adequate moisture for turf. Sets and maintains automatic irrigation systems to run systematically according to requirements.
  • Designs, installs, tests and maintains new irrigation systems, backflow devices and controllers. May provide functional and technical direction to other grounds staff with regard to irrigation systems design, installation and maintenance.
  • Replaces hardware for the Toro Lynx irrigation system as needed (e.g., wires, valves, etc.)
  • Operates special and/or heavy equipment and vehicles to perform the duties of an irrigation technician. May be required to operate backhoe and/or pay loader.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation backflow devices. May test backflow devices.
  • Documents and maintains appropriate logs, records and inventory of systems.
  • Responds to work order request and needs for assistance through various communication methods.
  • Performs specialized tasks during adverse weather conditions and closures.

Qualifications

Work Environment

Daily exposure to outdoor weather with temperatures reaching well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to contaminants such as pollutants, gasses, dust, or orders. Spend time using your hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls. Exposure to loud sounds that are distracting or uncomfortable at times.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full-body range of physical motion. The employee must be able to:

  • Stand for sustained periods of time;
  • Walk about on foot to accomplish tasks;
  • Bend legs at knee and come to a rest on knee or knees;
  • Bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine;
  • Extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction;
  • Engage in repetitive movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers;
  • Apply pressure to an object with the fingers and palm;
  • Occasionally lift a minimum of 50 pounds of weight, and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.

 

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-year relevant experience.
  • Experience with Toro Lynx irrigation system preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language.
