OVERVIEW

Founded in 1947 by Nina Vance, the Alley Theatre is a pioneer of regional theatre, and one of the leading nonprofit theatre companies in the United States. The Alley has been awarded the prestigious Regional Theatre Tony Award and the Texas Medal of Arts Award. The Alley has transferred productions to Broadway, Off-Broadway, major European Festivals, and to 40 American cities. Unique among regional theatres, the Alley is committed to maintaining a Resident Acting Company and providing them work year-round. Nationally recognized directors, actors, playwrights, and designers from across the country have regularly joined the Resident Acting Company.

JOB STATEMENT:

 

The Performance House Manager supervises ushers and directs housekeeping, engineering, security, and valet requests from guests.  Manager is responsible for patron evacuation in an emergency. Position scheduling is determined by performance schedule of the Alley Theatre.  Shifts range from four to six hours; applicants must be available nights and weekends.  Manager reports to the Senior Manager FOH and apprises Director of Developments in customer service on a per performance basis.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Coordinates performance starts with the stage manager and the box office to ensure punctual start times.
  • Provides care of and assists guests during shows.
  • Guest advocate with Housekeeping, Concessions, Engineering and Valet
  • Directs the Security Guard’s location and route.
  • Acts as Manager on Duty for shows must be able to make rapid decisions and be an active problem-solver.
  • Directs the Lobby Supervisor to perform guest assistance and to maintain structural decorum of the theatre’s lobby and other public areas.
  • Writes and distributes Performance House reports.
  • Responsible for recharging of walkies, scanners, and ALDs after each performance
  • Prepares Incident Reports and follow up documentation.
  • Keeps Senior Manager of Front of House apprised of developments in guest service on a daily basis.

 

In addition to the duties listed above, the Alley Theatre expects the following of each employee: adheres to theatres policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality; meets department productivity standards; participates in Alley Theatre events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE): 

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, focusing on evening and weekend performance schedules
  • Professional dress during performances
  • Be articulate and energetic to ensure guest needs are met, complaints are resolved, and service is provided quickly and efficiently
  • Impartial judgment with regard to guest service and volunteer relationships
  • Ability to work with guests of different ages and diversity populations
  • Understanding of historical and institutional racism in the American theatre, or a commitment to learning, and to be a part of Alley Theatre’s efforts to be an anti-racist organization
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately manage confidential information
  • Obtain and maintain First Aid (CPR and First Aid) certification
  • Familiarity in Office 365 suite and willingness to learn Tessitura CRM software
  • At least two years of work experience
  • High school or GED completion, some college a plus

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 5 hours with full range of motion
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds
  • Ability to move chairs, stands, and stanchions
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to navigate areas of low lighting and visibility

 

Although the duties of the position are predominately indoors the employee may need to be outdoors during patron health screening and emergency evacuations.
