ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

 

  1. Instruct, train, and advise Tribal Police Officers in the functions, duties, and responsibilities of police officers for the efficient maintenance of law and order within the jurisdiction of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma.
  2. Recommends to the Executive Director for appointments of employees to and dismissal from the Tribal Police force.
  3. Provide a Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma Tribal Police Officer to the Tribal Courts to perform bailiff service, transportation of prisoners, and services of court papers.
  4. Adopt reasonable regulations for police officers to serve as a standard of conduct to insure the efficient maintenance of law and order.
  5. Encourage cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and able to obtain MOU’s when necessary.
  6. Perform such other law enforcement related activities, as the Business Committee shall direct and provide follow-up.
  7. Supervise all subordinate officers and employees of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma Tribal Police Department.
  8. May serve as commander of the emergency response group team, schedules training exercises and coordinates activities.
  9. Responsible for maintaining working relationships with FEMA and maintaining the hazard mitigation plan and response groups.
  10. Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur on tribal land.
  11. Prepares daily work schedules for KTOPD personnel; prepares and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents.
  12. Conducts inspections of assigned staff at beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure that they are properly maintained; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift.
  13. Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
  14. Enforces institutional rules and regulations; maintains security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing, and/or walking.
  15. Provides a leadership role to all officers and managers. Serves as a positive role model.
  16. Oversee all aspects of department operations, including staffing, budgeting, policy development, tribal code development/updates and community relations, ensuring the safety and security of the community.
  17. Provides leadership and direction to all personnel within the department, ensuring effective and efficient operations.
  18. Responsible for developing and implementing departmental standard policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  19. Fosters positive relationships with the community, addressing concerns and building trust.
  20. Develop community awareness programs to inform community members of police functions, emergency preparedness, crime prevention techniques and/or other events for community awareness.
  21. Plays a key role in preventing and suppressing crime, ensuring the safety and security of the community.
  22. Responsible for coordinating the department's response to emergencies and major incidents.
  23. Oversees the investigation of crimes and other incidents, ensuring justice and accountability.
  24. Analyze crime data to identify trends and develop strategies to address crime problems.
  25. Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations to enhance public safety.
  26. Ensures that the department operates in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations including tribal codes and other ordinances and applicable codes pertaining to criminal and civil law enforcement.
  27. Represent the department to the public and media, maintaining transparency and accountability and in the best interest of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma.
  28. Exercise tact and diplomacy in maintaining self-control in confrontational situations while on duty and while supervising staff.
  29. Perform other duties as assigned.
  30. Must possess the ability to work responsively with effective communication skills both written and oral.
  31. Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time performing repetitive work at the computer.  Some bending, stretching, and lifting.

  • To report and document accidents/injuries immediately to supervisor.
  • Attends all scheduled employee trainings and brings suggestions for improvement.

 

Qualifications

        Education and Experience: 

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

5 years' experience 

CLEET certification

 

Additional Qualifications

  1. CLEET certification.
  2. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  3. Ability to maintain a HIGH level of confidentiality.
  4. Ability to work independently and with others.
  5. Able to work under high stress.
  6. Follow safety rules and procedures.
  7. Must have valid Oklahoma drivers’ license.
  8. English language necessary.  Kickapoo language a plus.
  9. Applicants will be subject to drug testing.
  10. Applicants must be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week.

 

Work Environment

Ability to work under pressure and maintain personal composure evaluates situations and act/react appropriately, use tact in dealing with business associates, staff, visitors, and tribal members in difficult situations. 

 

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job as an employee in an office setting.  Normal office conditions exist; Noise levels, stress, tribal members/visitors/Business Associates/staff and peers flow vary but may be considered high.  Administrative workload will be managed daily with additional hours required from time-to-time.

 

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk and hear/listen.  There are prolonged periods of sitting and reading as well as standing. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance and computer and color vision.  Talking and hearing/listening are essential to communicate with tribal members/visitors/Business Associates/staff and peers.  

 

There are constant deadlines associated with this position.  The employee must be able to multi-task, and interact with a wide variety of people at various times and on complicated and diverse issues.

 

Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor at all times and on any occasion wherein representing the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma.

At-Will Employer

 

In reference to Personnel Policy, Section 1-24, Employment At-Will.  All employees who do not have a written contract with the employer for a specific fixed term of employment are thereby employed at the will of the employer for an indefinite period. Employment with the Kickapoo Tribe, without a written contract, is voluntary and therefore employees are free to resign at any time with or without cause or reason. Likewise, the Tribe may terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without notice and for any lawful reason deemed appropriate by the Tribe for good cause, bad cause, or no cause at all.  This policy is commonly referred to as “employment-at-will.”
