Description

The Director of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life is a senior manager in the Division of Student Affairs  and is a full time/12 month live on position at Emory & Henry. The Director  serves as the Chief Housing Officer for all functions of housing and residence life. The Director assists the Assistant Vice President of Access, Impact, and Student Engagement  in providing general programmatic support and coordination of divisional activities.

 

 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Housing & Residence Life Department Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of Students to provide leadership, vision, and direction for the Housing & Residence Life. 

  • Provide oversight/leadership for the following programs/activities: supervision of professional and student employees, the residence life curriculum and student engagement model, residence hall budgets, billing and assignments, facilities management, move-in and move-out, capital asset renewal and ordering, marketing, meal plan administration, and student mail services. 

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students on departmental assessment and learning outcomes, policy and protocol revision and development, risk management, and student success goals. 

 

Supervision

  • Supervise Area Coordinators and the Coordinator of Housing Operations. 

  • Provide on-going feedback through bi-weekly one-on-one meetings; attend to their personal and professional development; and discuss ongoing performance goals. 

  • Provide oversight and leadership through indirectly supervising the Housing & Residence Life student staff.

 

Student Staff Training & Development

  • Oversee formal on-going leadership training and recognition programs for Housing & Residence Life student staff which are developed, implemented, and managed by the Area Coordinator staff

  • Lead development and revision of the residence life curriculum

  • Coordinate logistical planning of training sessions

  • Lead development, assessment, evaluation, and revision of the student engagement and hall programming model

 

Student Crisis Management

  • Provide individualized response plans for students who have been identified as needing assistance

  • Work individually with students, parents, campus partners, and external emergency personnel to provide support for students in crisis.

 

Programming & Community Development

  • Oversee all residence education and programming efforts in the residence halls

  • Research and stay current on best practices in higher education

  • Serve as a vital and functioning member of Student Affairs by assisting in the overall development and revision of a community development philosophy

 

Housing Operations & Facilities Management

  • Oversee all housing operations and business operations for the residence halls 

  • Attend Jenzabar training and serve as a key point of knowledge for handling all housing and residence life components of the software

  • Serve as the main liaison to the Facilities Management Department on matters involving the residence halls

  • Lead department in creating procedures and policies

  • Guide the revision of housing operation forms, including but not limited to the Housing Agreement, Residency Waiver Request, Residence Life Data Form, etc. 

  • Oversee plans for large scale projects such as Move-In, Move Out, etc.

 

Capital Purchasing

  • Collaborate with the VP for Administration to manage capital asset budgets for repair and renovation of the residence halls, including investigating products, placing orders, suggesting repair and replacement schedules and providing leadership in coordinating delivery of items

  • Work closely with the Housing Operations Coordinator to implement a tracking system of all capital items

 

Student Conduct

  • Serve as conduct officer for upper-level conduct violations within residence halls 

  • Serve on conduct boards and Title IX panels

 

Budget Management

  • Actively work with the professional staff to ensure the department spends budget appropriately and does not exceed the budget

  • Accurately project budget expenditures for departmental programs

  • Reconcile budget with live-in professional staff for their respective halls

  • Train professional staff to ensure they are processing budget related paperwork according to the policies and procedures established by the Business Office

  • Ensure staff know how to properly use credit cards and internal payment strategies

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Housing Operations  to ensure that revenue billing is correct on a term basis and revenue projections are accurate on an ongoing basis

 

On-Call Responsibilities 

  • Serve in the Professional Staff rotation to provide 24-hour support for Housing & Residence Life staff 

  • Serve as a contact for any faculty, staff, student, or guest in crisis on Emory & Henry University property while serving as Professional Staff on-call.

  • Serve in the Professional Staff  On-Call rotation for an assigned portion of breaks

  • In order to provide an appropriate response to students during a personal or facilities crisis, the Director should be available, even when not on-call, unless prearranged with the Dean of Students

 

Professional Staff Selection & Training

  • Coordinate and manage the formal recruitment and selection process for all Housing & Residence Life professional staff

  • Work with Human Resources to coordinate job searches

  • Initiate position description review and revision

  • Coordinate on-campus interviews and facilitate travel and reimbursement process for candidates

  • Oversee all professional staff training in conjunction with the Dean of Students

  • Conduct assessment to identify areas professional staff need new training

  • Plan and implement ongoing professional development opportunities for professional staff

  • Assist in management of the creation and update of a housing operations manual and an Area Coordinator manual.

 

Assessment & Analytics 

  • Work with the Dean of Students to assess the effectiveness of Housing & Residence Life programs and procedures, including but not limited to the residence life curriculum, housing assignment process, on-call conduct processes and procedures, student staff training, etc. 

  • Work with the Dean of Students in reporting data related to current and historical data to be used both internally and with outside constituents.

 

Marketing & Communications

  • Work with the Dean of Students on a marketing plan for Housing & Residence Life that includes publications, e-communication, and the website

  • Work closely with the Marketing & Communications Department to schedule annual review and revision of existing marketing efforts and to initiate appropriate new efforts, including social media, web, and print publications

  • Communicate student issues/crises to Student Affairs professional staff as appropriate

  • Respond to parental communication

  • Meet bi-weekly with all direct reports

  • Provide written reports as requested by department heads

 

Student Care & Success

  • Serve as a core member of the Care Team and communicate personal and emotional concerns of students to Care Team members

  • Provide support for student success case management

  • Work with campus partners to identity and eliminate barriers to student success and retention

  • Utilize resources at your disposal through other departments, such as Financial Aid, Academic Support and Disability Services, Counseling Services, Facilities, and Health Services to provide a coordinated response to student needs

 

Interdepartmental Liaison

  • Serve as liaison with other departments and offices on campus, including but not limited to Campus Safety, Dining Services, the Powell Student Success Center, the President’s Office, Human Resources, Admissions, Advancement, etc.

  • Serve on university committees and various work groups as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in student affairs in higher education, counseling, or related field is required.
  • Must have a minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in Housing & Residence Life.
  • A successful candidate must be a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize strategies and tasks in an independent way.
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including cross-cultural communication skills, understanding of the fluidity of gender, the needs of differently abled students, and the ability to create and promote an inclusive community.
  • Demonstrated collegiality and leadership ability.
  • Student-focused candidate with experience supervising staff (paraprofessional or professional), developing community, advising student groups, working with other student affairs offices, and promoting student learning in a residence hall setting.
  • Understanding of business operations and facilities operations, including day-to-day operations as well as long term planning and assessment.
  • Basic understanding of mental health and mental health support.
  • Skills in crisis management, counseling, mediation, and student referrals.
  • Strong written and verbal skills. Ability to effectively communicate in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Skills in working effectively with parents and families.
