Position Summary

The Jr. Counselor co-leads, supports, and motivates campers throughout their camp experience. The Jr. Camp Counselor will assist camp staff in planning camp events, leading group events, and monitoring campers to ensure they have a safe and memorable camp experience. This is a great opportunity for older Girl Scouts to continue learning and growing within Girl Scouts and learn the foundations of communication and leadership as they begin their professional development in a familiar and supportive work environment.

Marine Landing Day Camp

Marine Landing is a waterfront facility with its own private beach. Daily activities for campers include kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and swimming. Due to the nature and number of aquatic activities, every staff member at Marine Landing is required to be lifeguard certified. Training is provided before camp begins, if needed. This camp is the perfect location for those who have a strong comfort in the water, want to spend their summer outside and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.  
    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.  
    • Assure campers are always properly supervised.  
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines. 
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of program experiences and activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.  
    • Responsible for co-leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.  
    • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned with other camp staff.
    • Assist in program areas such as archery, climbing wall, and all camp activities, as directed.   
  3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.  
    • Monitor the wellbeing of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs and communicate observations with other staff as needed.
    • Be alert to campers' and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the appropriate camp staff. 
    • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the appropriate camp staff. 
  4. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.   
    • Familiarize yourself, follow, and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.   
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship. 
  5. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.   
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings.   
    • Assist where needed during camper arrival and departure. 
    • Assist during check in/out and provide outstanding customer service to campers and adults. 
  6. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have completed both the CIT 1 and CIT 2 programs at a GSGLA Camp
  • Must be entering 12th grade in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.
  • Must obtain valid B1-1 and B1-4 work permit approved by school.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
