Position Summary

The Leadership Experience Coordinator participates in the implementation of Girl Scout programming, ensures safety of the campers, and encourages the success of every camper. The Leadership Experience Coordinator is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, carrying out activities, and goals set by the youth leadership team. Help instruct the youth leadership team, grow leadership skills and gain ability to display them. 

La Casita Day Camp

La Casita, a beautiful and historic camp cherished by generations of Girl Scouts, is nestled peacefully in the hillsides above Claremont. Adjacent to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, it is home to fascinating native plants and animals. There is no better place for girls to step away from the urban hustle and bustle and learn about the natural world and how humans can protect it. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of youth leadership throughout the camp to meet the intended outcomes.
    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with youth leaders through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Assure campers and youth leaders are always properly supervised.
    • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for youth leaders within the mission and outcomes.
    • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
    • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
    • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
    • Assist in program areas such as archery, high ropes and all camp activities, as directed.
  3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
    • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Specialist.
    • Be alert to campers’ and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with Health and Inclusion Specialist and/or Outdoor Program Supervisor when appropriate.
    • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Experience Manager. 
  4. Be a role model to youth leaders and staff in your attitude and behavior. 
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. 
    • Set a good example to youth leaders and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship. 
  5. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
    • Attend and participate in daily meetings. 
    • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.  
    • Provide check in/out support and provide outstanding customer service to families.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 18 years old or a high school graduate by the start of camp.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must have documented experience teaching or interacting with youth program.
  •  Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
