Position Summary
The Activities Coordinator is responsible for monitoring programs and activities as set forth by the Camp Experience Manager and by the Outdoor Program Supervisor. The Activities Coordinator also facilitates programs within GSGLA safety guidelines. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating a positive learning environment in a summer camp setting, monitoring upkeep and safe use of activity equipment (i.e. high ropes and archery), and assisting with the implementation of camp activities.
La Casita Day Camp
La Casita, a beautiful and historic camp cherished by generations of Girl Scouts, is nestled peacefully in the hillsides above Claremont. Adjacent to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, it is home to fascinating native plants and animals. There is no better place for girls to step away from the urban hustle and bustle and learn about the natural world and how humans can protect it.
The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
- Assist in the implementation of staff training for specific activity areas.
- Train other staff in their responsibilities during activities.
- Ensure that American Camping Association (ACA) standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSGLA are followed.
- Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
- Provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment.
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
- Assist in management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.
- Oversee care and storage of all archery and high ropes equipment.
- Log use of specialized activity equipment daily.
- Oversee daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and in good repair.
- Ensure that program areas are free of hazards and debris.
- Monitor and provide feedback to Activity and Unit Leaders to develop and implement all facets of camp program activities.
- Regularly monitor work of Activities Leaders to ensure safety.
- Provide recommendations and relate concerns to Camp Experience Manager regarding staff performance and competency.
- Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.
- Function as a member of the camp staff team both within activities and throughout the camp day to direct and supervise camp operations.
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders.
- Address program concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Camp Experience Manager and Outdoor Program Supervisor.
- Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
- Participate in staff meetings when available.
- Assist where needed with camper “check-in” and “check-out”.
- Provide staff support and provide outstanding customer service to families.
- Function as an Acting Director in accordance with the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
