Position Summary

The Camp Experience Manager is responsible for assisting with the management of the camp’s day-to-day operations including the supervision and training of camp staff, the development of program materials, and safety procedures at camp.

El Ranchito Day Camp

Tucked away in the charming suburbs of Long Beach, El Ranchito is a tree-lined high adventure day camp, where campers are encouraged to take safe risks that boost bravery and promote goal setting. Exciting, confidence-building outdoor activities include archery, low ropes, and a 32-foot climbing tower.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Supervise and evaluate staff (Counselors, Coordinators and Junior Counselors) to develop and implement program activities for all facets of camp.
    • Regularly supervise and give feedback to camp staff.
    • Provide recommendations and concerns to Outdoor Program Supervisor regarding staff performance.
    • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders. 
    • Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.
    • Function as an Acting Director in accordance with the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.
  2. Deliver a fun and safe program that meets the standards laid out in the camp guide. 
    • Ensure program schedules are prepared and implemented that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers. 
    • Deliver progressive program activities. 
    • Evaluate the success of the program and the development of the campers’ abilities and skills in various program activities. 
  3. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior. 
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. 
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  4. Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the overall camp operations. 
    • Address program concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Outdoor Program Supervisor. 
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. 
    • Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
    • Participate in staff meetings and lead daily staff meetings as needed.
    • Assist where needed with camper “check-in” and “check-out”. 
    • Provide outstanding customer service to families.  
  5. Develop and implement programs and schedules for all areas of camp program and facilities. 
    • Collaborate with Camp Experience Coordinator to create program facilitator guides and activity schedules. 
    • Work with the Camp Experience Coordinator and the Outdoor Program Supervisor to ensure Parent and Camper satisfaction.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 21 years of age as stated by the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of day camp (June 18, 2025 - August 22, 2025) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must have at least 2 years documented experience teaching or interacting in youth programming.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
