Job Summary:  

As a member of the Health and Nutrition Services (HNS) department, the Health and Nutrition Coordinator (HNC) manages the HNS Services to one "Cluster" comprised of 8 to 10 centers, representing 500-600 families. Support may also include CPC partner agencies/providers. The HNC develops, implements, and administers research-based systems, policies and procedures aligned with the Child-Parent Centers (CPC) philosophy and curriculum approach, and that comply with the regulatory requirements of the Office of Head Start (OHS), the Arizona Department of Human Services (ADHS), Arizona Bureau of Child Care Licensing (BCCL) and incorporate best practice principles. The HNC promotes the health and wellbeing of children, their families and CPC staff using a multidisciplinary approach to ensure high-quality health, oral health and nutrition services. HNCs lead development and implementation of any Health Accommodation Plans for children with special health needs. HNCs collaborate with other CPC staff, community partners, healthcare providers, and parents to address individual needs of participating children and ensure access to services and resources. The HNC directly supervises 2 Health Specialists utilizing a coaching and mentoring model while implementing agency supervision systems that require routine monitoring, analysis and adaptations of Specialist responsibilities and performance. HNC duties also include provision of direct services, parent training, staff professional development, as well as ongoing support to Center teams. The position requires strong communication skills, confidentiality, and ability to work in a fast paced, time sensitive compliance driven environment.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institute with a major in Health Science, Nutrition, Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Health, or agreed equivalent that supports high quality implementation of our program as determined by the agency. 
  • A minimum of five to eight (5-8) years of experience working with community health and nutrition 
  • A minimum of three to five (3-5) years supervisory experience  
  • Demonstrated experience using Office 365 (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive) 
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English 
  • Submit a current AZ Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card prior to start date. 

 

Other Requirements (post hire): 

  • Must be able to travel to and from various sites as needed. 
  • Provide proof of immunizations: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Tdap (adult Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), and a clear Tuberculosis skin test or chest X-ray. 
  • Able to pass a company paid physical exam prior to starting work. 
  • Able to pass a criminal background check. 
  • Must be able to prove the right to work in the USA by providing appropriate documents to complete the Federal I-9 form. 
  • Ability to obtain Child Care Health Consultant certification within 1 year of employment.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Possess a master’s degree with major in Health Science, Nutrition, or Public Health or agreed equivalent that supports high quality implementation of our program as determined by the agency.  
  • Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) 
  • Possess a Child Care Health Consultant certification 
  • Three (3) years program management experience in a mission-driven organization or with a Head Start program. 
  • Read, write, speak, and understand Spanish

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 

Health and Nutrition Services Management: 

  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure the Health and Nutrition Services Department provides high-quality health services that meet the needs of children and families, while ensuring compliance with OHS Performance Standards, ADHS regulations, the Bureau of Child Care Licensing (BCCL), and incorporate emerging best practices. 
  • Develop, coordinate, and participate in routine monitoring individually and in the agency’s multidisciplinary teams to ensure and adapt effective comprehensive services to families. 
  • At least monthly, visit each assigned center to provide staff support and relationship building; meet with parents as necessary. 
  • Provide ongoing health and safety trainings to ensure children and staff are kept safe at all times. 
  • Provide direct services for children and staff at centers: 
    • Serve as a substitute for essential duties of the Health Specialist during absence, such as scheduling and performing anthropometric, hearing and vision screenings on children. 
    • Conduct blood lead and/or anemia screenings on children as needed.   
    • Determine and create appropriate accommodation plans for individual child special health needs. Facilitate development of plans with health care providers, Registered Dietitian, parent/guardian and the cross-departmental teams input. These may include Medication Plans and Special Diet plans as well as other categories of health needs.  
    • Serve as liaison between medical providers and families in obtaining services and ensuring proper documentation of services provided. 
    • Provide training to families and staff to increase understanding of medical needs; ensure that training are aligned with agency philosophy and curriculum, including cross-departmental participation as appropriate. 
  • Initiate referral and follow-up to primary care providers and community agencies including WIC and local Health Departments. 
  • Review and approve requests for Head Start funds to provide medical and dental services to participants. Ensure current information and understanding of Arizona State Immunization requirements. 
  • Conduct on-going health and safety visits to monitor policies and procedure compliance at agency centers. 
  • Monitor, assess and generate growth assessments for children and refer for further services as appropriate. 
  • In collaboration with the agency Registered Dietitian, research and develop health and nutrition education materials and provide nutrition workshops to families and staff. 
  • Provide support to pregnant women with health and nutrition education, breastfeeding support and other needs as appropriate.  
  • Collaborate with Food Services to ensure a high-quality nutrition program by: 
    • Participating in meal evaluations 
    • Participate in menu planning to ensure menus meet the CACFP requirement and the nutrition needs of all children. 
    • In collaboration with the agency Registered Dietitian, approve Special Diet Accommodation Plans and create special diet menus. 

Supervision: 

  • Supervise assigned specialists by providing direction, input, and feedback using tools and resources provided in the agency’s performance planning, supervision and evaluation system.  
  • Provide a minimum of one supported supervision meeting per month to assigned specialists. Use reflective practice supervision and coaching strategies with consistency and equity to create a learning environment that supports development while maintaining accountability for performance.   
  • Support and monitor assigned specialists in professional achievement or personal growth through the professional development system including attainment of required education and/or certifications. 
  • Identify self-growth, development goals, and strategies for achievement with support and input from supervisor.  
  • Commit and participate in consistent and planned meetings with supervisor to further professional growth by seeking feedback, reflecting on and assessing own practice, and taking advantage of opportunities to improve skills and knowledge. 

 

Recordkeeping Monitoring and Reporting: 

  • Update and develop internal procedures and systems for the agency’s monitoring and reporting database, to ensure efficient and effective systems.  
  • Maintain and monitor up-to-date program systems and data, ensuring accuracy in the agency’s databases and reporting.  
  • Prepare, review and analyze statistical data and report results to the department, unit and agency. 
  • Develop training materials for on-going support needs and professional growth; provide training on software management, data entry, tracking, monitoring and reporting. 
  • Utilize data and information to ensure continuous program improvement and achievement of high-quality service outcomes. Identify health and safety related patterns and trends, recommend plans for improvement and provide support as appropriate. 
  • Conduct record and data file monitoring of assigned caseload. 

 

Leadership, Management and Teamwork: 

  • Participate on the HNS management team and contribute to the decision-making process for strategic initiatives, professional development, budget, governance, and agency self-assessment. Implement and monitor key management decisions in the areas of health and nutrition services systems. 
  • Participate on the Comprehensive Services Unit team and contribute to the CS Unit Cross-Department Collaboration team in support of integrated policies, procedures and services. 
  • Maintain health and nutrition expertise including best practices, local, state, and federal initiatives through active membership in professional organizations and establishment of good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Link current research, resources, and program data to practice by discussing program quality issues and ways to advance practice. 
  • Following agency guidelines, advocate for the health and nutritional needs of Head Start children and their families. 
  • Serve as Liaison to the public schools and other community agencies in reference to the health and nutritional needs of enrolled children and coordinate activities with other departments.  
  • Collaborate with others to develop and coordinate trainings to ensure staff are up to date on current policies and procedures. 
  • Develop and participate in program self-assessment and planning activities to ensure departmental compliance with regulations and continuous quality improvement agency wide. 
  • Participate in the Health and Nutrition Services Advisory Committee and other networking activities as assigned.
