DIVISION:  Operations

 

DEPARTMENT: Outpatient Mental Health

 

UNIT:  Mental Health Disorder Counseling

 

CLASSIFICATION: Full time.  Hourly. W2 or 1099 (if the candidate's services meets certain criteria)

 

COMPENSATION RANGE: $20.00 per hour ($41,600.00 per year) to $30.00 per hour ($62,400.00 per hear) biweekly commensurate on experience, credentials, and completion of assigned duties.

WORK SCHEDULEMonday – Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Counselor will work one of five Charles County Maryland middle schools within a 20 mile radius each work day and spend the entire day at the school assigned for the day.

 

ANTICIPATED TRAVEL:  50% of the time. There is no additional compensation for travel.

 

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Assigned Clinical Supervisor

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The School-Based Mental Health Counselor will provide direct mental health services to students within a school setting at the Charles County Middle Schools. The counselor will support students' emotional, psychological, and social well-being, working collaboratively with school staff, families, and external mental health professionals. The role involves assessments, interventions, and counseling aimed at improving students' ability to succeed academically and socially.

 

SCHEDULED DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Individual and Group Counseling:

    • Provide one-on-one counseling sessions to students dealing with various mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and behavioral issues.

    • Facilitate group counseling sessions addressing peer relationships, stress management, and other relevant issues.

  • Assessment and Diagnosis:

    • Conduct mental health assessments and develop individualized treatment plans for students.

    • Identify signs of emotional, psychological, and developmental challenges.

  • Crisis Intervention:

    • Provide immediate support and intervention in crisis situations (e.g., self-harm, suicidal ideation, family emergencies).

    • Develop and implement safety plans when necessary.

  • Collaboration:

    • Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to identify and address students' mental health needs.

    • Partner with families to ensure coordinated care and provide resources or referrals as needed.

    • Collaborate with external mental health professionals for cases requiring more intensive care or specialized interventions.

  • Consultation and Education:

    • Provide consultation to teachers and staff on mental health topics, including strategies to manage behavioral issues in the classroom.

    • Conduct workshops or informational sessions for parents and staff on topics such as mental health awareness, stress management, and emotional well-being.

  • Record Keeping and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of students' progress, sessions, and assessments in compliance with school and state policies.

    • Prepare reports on student progress and outcomes as needed.

  • Program Development and Implementation:

    • Develop and implement school-wide mental health initiatives or programs aimed at promoting mental well-being among the student population.

    • Help establish peer support groups or after-school programs that encourage emotional and social development.

  • Professional Development:

    • Stay updated on current research and best practices in mental health counseling, particularly in a school setting.

    • Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.

 

UNSCHEDULED DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist supervisor with work related requests.

  • Collaborate with and serve as program POC for external treatment providers and outside agencies as needed.

  • Responsible for following regulations of COMAR, CARF, any other regulatory body, and company policies/ procedures related to service delivery and documentation and co-facilitating orientation of all new hires to these as well.

  • Support the maintenance of a safe environment by participating in training and drills as requested.

  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to client’s treatment.

  • Participate in external and internal audits/surveys (CARF/CSA/OHCQ) as directed by the supervisor.

  • Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement plans by completing periodic audits or other activities to ensure regulatory compliance and/or improve service delivery.

  • Ensure medical director or clinical supervisor review and co-sign documents as required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Regularly walk, stand or stoop; occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; and regularly drives a motor vehicle.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primary work location is within the school.
  • Some travel may be required for home visits or meetings with external mental health agencies.
  • May need to work outside of normal school hours for emergencies or special events.

Qualifications

COMPETENCY / EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, students, and families.
  • Knowledge of mental health interventions, counseling techniques, and behavioral therapies.
  • Familiarity with crisis intervention strategies.

EDUCATION:

  • Possess at least an associate degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or health related field (Interns and students pursuing such degrees may provide services under this scope through contract with the higher learning institution only)

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

Must be licensed, certified or approved to render services Maryland in one of the following disciplines:

  • Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC), or
  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), or
  • Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LCADC), or
  • Licensed Graduate Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LGADC), or
  • Certified Associate Counselor – Alcohol & Drug (CAC-AD), or
  • Certified Supervised Counselor – Alcohol & Drug (CSC-AD), or
  • Alcohol & Drug Trainee (ADT), or
  • Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical (LCSW-C), or
  • Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW), or
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), or
  • Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW), or
  • Registered Nurse Psychotherapist (APRN-PMH / RN-PMH), or
