HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services (HSVS) Nuevo Camino program is dedicated to providing 38 unaccompanied minors, ages 5-12, with a supportive, nurturing environment through transitional foster homes, daily education Monday - Friday, and supportive wrap-around services in the East Brooklyn section of New York City. Our program is rooted in ensuring that service delivery is trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and tailored to the needs of each child while maintaining all program requirements of ORR. 

 

Nuevo Camino is currently seeking a Teacher’s Assistant who will be responsible for assisting the educational coordinator with curriculum development in the subject area in which they have the experience, and the delivery of assigned teaching activities/services to increase the skill level of the program participants.  

 

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions of Position: 

  • Will help in the development of all lesson plans and curriculum for Transitional Foster Care. 

  • Will assist the teacher to ensure that the lesson plans meet the developmental needs of the youth in the program, are in their native language, and provide opportunities for the youth to learn English and Acculturation. 

  • Will assist the teacher to work with the Office of Refugee Resettlement and other governing bodies to ensure that the program is meeting standards as they relate to the educational needs of the youth supported by the program. 

  • Will ensure that youth who require specialized tutorial services receive the appropriate tutorial services. 

  • Will help to create and facilitate educational activities in the community as well as hands-on projects that will enhance the lesson plans provided to the UAC youth. 

  • Will maintain an inventory of all education supplies and ensure that the education program is fully equipped to meet the needs of the youth supported by the program. 

  • Will facilitate assessments for minors within 72 hours of arrival and every 90 days thereafter. Will type and upload the assessments to UC Portal. 

  • Must be prepared to cover and teach any class in the program 

  • Will participate in agency meetings and training as required

Qualifications

  • One-year experience providing educational services to youth who present behavioral, educational, and emotional challenges is preferred. 

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish. Experience leading an English as Second Language Curriculum is a must. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field with progression towards English as a Second Language extension or in pathways to receive Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with bilingual extension preferred. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a team. 

  • Strong interest in working with immigrant young persons. 

  • HSVS requires all new hires to provide proof of vaccination prior to their start date. Employees who require accommodation for medical or religious reasons should notify Human Resources.
