Job Summary

The Medical Support Professional (MSP) is responsible for overseeing a variety of medical/dental and medication related activities for the residence, under the oversight of the program nurse and program management. The Medical Support Professional schedules all medical/dental appointments in conjunction with the program nurse.

The Medical Support Professional is also available to serve as a DSP, either part-time on a regular schedule or as needed, depending upon total weekly MSP hours. This includes implementing person-centered services for each individual and ensuring implementation of the individuals services, goals and outcomes in relation to program-based and community inclusion activities. In addition, the Direct Support Professional is directly responsible for the individuals overall physical and emotional well-being.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly inventory of all medication.
  • Ensure that overnight AMAP is doing a weekly medication inventory.
  • Check MAR’s daily for any missing signatures.
  • Check bowel movement charts daily, whether on paper or in Precision Care.
  • Check finger stick charts according to schedule.
  • Check that all controlled medications have a count sheet and are being signed and counted daily.
  • Check MAR monthly for current prescriptions. There must be a copy of a prescription in the MAR book for each medication prescribed. Monthly prescriptions for controlled meds and six months for all other medications.
  • Schedule all medical and dental appointments in conjunction with the program nurse.
  • Prepare all monthly MAR sheets making sure all information, including medication names, dosages and times are correct.
  • Make sure prescriptions have a drug specific sheet to match in the MAR.
  • Make sure all discontinued medications have a d/c prescription to match.
  • Attend all program medical meetings, whether weekly or bi-weekly as per the residence’s schedule.
  • Create a tracking system in conjunction with Coordinator of Health Services of medication inventory (medication inventory form).
  • Create a tracking system in conjunction with Coordinator of Health Services for all medical appointments, diagnostic and lab testing.
  • Make sure all reports for labs or any other diagnostic testing is retrieved within two weeks.
  • Make sure any MIPS forms, if needed, are completed, and attached to CVS prior to the appointment.
  • Ensure AMAP’s are documenting bowel movements for any individual’s who require bowel movement monitoring sheet.
  • Ensure monthly inventory of all OTC medications is checked for quantity and expiration dates. All expired OTC medications must be properly disposed of immediately.
  • In-service all new AMAP staff as suggested by the Program RN.
  • Attend majority of medical appointments and advocate proactively for individuals.
  • Inform the nurse and management immediately of any medication changes.
  • Contact program nurse after each medical appointment to inform him/her of the outcome.
  • Be responsible for the oversight of the AMAP communication book; ensure that all AMAP’s are reading and signing any new entry that has been logged in the book.

  • High school diploma, GED, CAN (Certified Nursing Assistant certification) or possess a Direct Support Professional (DSP) certificate from an accredited public or private organization.
  • Two years or more work experience with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Excellent written, communication and mathematical skills.
  • Valid NYS driver license preferred but not required.
  • A flexible work schedule.
