Job Summary

The Visual Arts Teaching Artist-in-Residence is responsible for teaching visual art techniques to individuals and Staff at designated Day Services Programs. This position will also provide guidance to artists who prefer to work independently, and provide support to ArtShare for HeartShare throughout programs located in Queens, New York.

The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who has experience working and or volunteer background with a strong emphasis in the visual arts field. Creativity, teaching, and presentation skills are a must. The candidate must be passionate about art and enjoy working with people.

 

Job Responsibilities

The Visual Arts Teaching Artist-in-Residence will provide weekly arts programming to assigned HeartShare day program sites in Queens, New York. This is a part-time role, requiring 18 hours per week. This effort should also include the simultaneous training of direct support professionals at the program sites to support the arts programming.

 

  • Assist with preparing artworks for exhibition, including framing and preparing canvases and other types of artworks for hanging.
  • Collaborate, as requested by the Director of ArtShare, with museums and performance venues to organize educational visits for HeartShare program participants and provide follow-up art projects based on lessons learned. For example, individuals may attend a guided tour at the American Museum of Natural History in the North American Mammals wing. The Visual Artist-in-Residence could then ask the participants to recreate some of the animals they saw or one of the environments depicted in the dioramas. Photographs are encouraged for reference purposes.
  • Provide regular reports, as directed by the Director of ArtShare, regarding program participant attendance, arts programming initiated and completed, and any other grant-related reporting measures.
  • Assist with the production of the annual ArtShare for HeartShare fall gallery exhibit in downtown Brooklyn on a volunteer-only basis.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple art projects simultaneously and shift priorities as needed.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and engage in required reporting activities to the Programming Coordinator.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, patience, and a positive attitude.
