Position Summary

The Performance Arts Teaching Artist-in-Residence is responsible for teaching performing arts techniques to Individuals and Staff at designated Day Services Programs, providing guidance to artists who prefer to work independently, and providing support to ArtShare for HeartShare.

Job Responsibilities

  • The Teaching Artist will provide weekly arts programming to assigned HeartShare day program sites in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island for three hours per site per week, for a period of 40 weeks. This effort should also include the simultaneous training of direct support professionals at the program sites to support the arts programming. For example, the artist in residence will demonstrate how to warm-up body and voice for theatre performance through a series of exercises (Performing Arts).
  • Assist with preparing showcase/performance of skills that individuals have been developing for recorded or Live performance. 
  • Collaborate, as requested by the Arts Programming Director, with museums/performances to attend educational visits for HeartShare program participants and provide follow-up projects from lessons learned. For example, Individuals may attend a guided tour with the American Museum of Natural History in the North American Mammals wing. The artist in residence could ask the Individuals back at the program to devise a short performance based  either some of the animals they saw or one of the environments depicted in the dioramas. 
  • Provide regular reports as directed by the Arts Programming Director, regarding attendance of program participants, arts programming initiated and completed, and any other grant-related reporting measures. For example, the artist in residence should keep an attendance list of artists during each session. Photographs are encouraged for reference purposes. HeartShare is responsible for obtaining the photographic consents for the Individuals. 
  • Represent HeartShare, both within and outside the organization, in a manner that promotes the Mission, Vision, and Values of the agency and of the ArtShare program.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and or Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or equivalent preferred or Master’s degree in Theater Arts, Musical Theater, Creative Arts Therapy, Drama Therapy, or related field
  • Prior volunteer or work experience with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), and diverse cultural communities preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and small groups at one time and to shift priorities as needed. 
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and engage in required reporting activities to Programming Director.  
  • Must be able to multi-task and detailed oriented
