Nature and Scope of Job
This is a part-time, non-exempt position whose principal responsibility is to perform a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of the Library building and grounds to support the delivery of service to Library patrons.
The hours for this position will be weekend hours only: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Saturdays and 11:30 am – 5:30 pm Sundays.
Essential Functions
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly interior and exterior cleaning and groundskeeping duties.
- Perform opening and closing procedures in accordance with established security guidelines.
- Monitor the condition of library facilities and grounds, both interior and exterior.
- Perform minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance and repairs, as assigned.
- Set up equipment needed for scheduled Library programs.
- Assist with tracking and monitoring maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge, skill, and ability in performance of standard custodial tasks.
- Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patrons and staff.
- Ability to independently exercise judgment within established library policy.
- Ability to deal calmly and effectively with a wide range of individuals, in some instances under stressful or emergency conditions.
- Ability to prioritize and schedule tasks and responsibilities to utilize time most efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to demonstrate consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a high level of productivity.
- Knowledge of standard computer operations and applications.
- Ability to work positively and effectively as a team member.
Essential Physical Requirements
Work takes place in a typical library environment inside and outside the library building. The person in this position:
- Has the ability to read a computer screen, barcodes, call numbers, labels and hardcopy written materials at close range.
- Frequently communicates publicly with library staff and patrons.
- Must operate a computer and computer keyboard.
- Constantly uses office machinery and equipment.
- Frequently moves around inside the library to access workstations, meeting spaces, office machinery and equipment, program, and library materials.
- Constantly positions oneself to access, move, prepare, and place library materials.
- Frequently traverses stairs, indoor and outdoor spaces of more than 300 feet within the building and grounds. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder.
- Constantly cleans, inspects, repairs, and maintains the library building, equipment, plumbing, electrical work, and furnishings.
- Must safely operate tools and maintenance equipment.
- Frequently moves and positions library material and furniture of up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to meet attendance requirements.
- Must be able to work a variable schedule which includes day, evening, and weekend hours.
- Must work in outdoor weather conditions.
Education
High School diploma (or equivalent) required.
Experience
Experience in janitorial, general maintenance, or related fields, preferred.
