Description

The Norton Museum of Art’s Master Gardener is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the planting and upkeep of the landscaping of the campus, parking lot, and Cranesnest properties. The work includes planning and carrying out all horticultural practices in a manner which is consistent with the Foster + Partner design. The Master Gardener also is responsible for the supervision of landscape contractors and may lead the work of junior employees. This position reports to the Director of Facilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops landscaping plans, contracts and specifications. Oversees contract landscape services.
  • Oversees the maintenance of all landscaping improvements, including the sprinkler systems.
  • Develops a long-range landscaping maintenance program and supervises the activities of garden maintenance workers.
  • Develops and follows a weekly schedule of garden work to be performed.
  • Able to discuss/inform Museum visitors regarding the garden’s plantings.
  • Performs landscaping maintenance work as required
  • Coordinate volunteer opportunities related to gardening and garden maintenance
  • Stay current with horticultural trends, new plant varieties, and sustainable practices to ensure the museum’s gardens are innovative and environmentally responsible
  • Implement and test new gardening techniques and technologies to improve garden health and efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed records of plant varieties, growth patterns, and garden maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with museum staff, including curators and event planners, to ensure garden spaces meet the needs of various museum functions and events
  • Collaborate with external contractors and suppliers for specialized gardening services and materials
  • Active member of the museum’s hurricane response team

Qualifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Science, or a related field. Certification as a Master Gardener preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in professional gardening or landscape management, with a strong background in horticultural practices

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with gardening, such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods

Other Requirements: 

  • Five day/40 hour per week schedule which may include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to work some nights, weekends or holidays for special events.
