Description

The Contract Art Handler is a part-time role that assists in the day-to-day installation and movement of artworks. The position is part of a team of the Exhibition Design and Installation team that is responsible for both the preparation of gallery spaces and the installation, handling, packing, and  crating of artworks in the permanent Collection and for temporary exhibitions. The Contract Art Handler works collaboratively with the Senior Registrar & Collections Manager as well as the Associate Registrar to ensure the proper care of artworks as they are activated throughout the Museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Installation and movement of all artworks with knowledge and experience in handling a variety of fine art mediums.
  • Assist in the packing and unpacking of artwork in accordance with professional museum standards. This includes the loading and unloading of trucks to ensure safe transit.
  • Prepare galleries for exhibition or Collection rotations which include, but is not limited to, painting gallery walls, building temporary walls, fabricating museum casework, pedestals or other display units, producing labels, and installing or removing vinyl signage.
  • Ensure the regular maintenance of galleries including the cleaning of frames, pedestals, display cases and the general upkeep and appearance of gallery spaces. 
  • Assist with shop maintenance and the organization of workspaces occupied by Exhibition Design and Installation team.
  • Assist with the proper lighting in galleries consistent to the design of the exhibition and in accordance with museum best practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 65 lbs. unassisted and must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 300lbs with the assistance of mechanical equipment.
  • Physically capable of climbing ladders, using shop equipment, and lifts.
  • Able to adapt to and work from various locations within and outside the museum.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally for Museum business as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • BA or BFA in art-related fields, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of related experience in a museum or art gallery environment.
  • Versed in professional fine art handling with significant experience in the best practices of art handling and installation with a strong sense of integrity and personal responsibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Exhibition Design & Installation team, Registrars, Curators, the larger Curatorial department, other museum staff, vendors and visitors.
  • Experience and knowledge of construction methods and safe use of power tools.
  • Must be comfortable with flexible work hours to meet the needs of installation schedules and the exhibition calendar.
