Assistant Athletic Director Compliance & Game Operations

The Assistant Director will assist the Sr. Director of Athletics with the daily operations of compliance and Academics of the intercollegiate athletics program.  The Assistant Director of Athletics Compliance is responsible for all compliance issues related to the daily management and operations of the Dominican University of California Athletics Department.  As the primary Compliance Officer, this person will ensure strict adherence to all NCAA bylaws and conference regulations as well as institutional policies and procedures.  The Assistant Director will assist the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to make sure student-athletes are meeting the academic standards and progress towards degree completion to stay compliant with the NCAA academic and eligibility standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Compliance/Academics

  1. Manage all aspects of NCAA and conference compliance rules for the Athletics Department which includes but is not limited to: coach and department compliance education; annual student-athlete compliance orientation; monitoring of recruiting, playing and practice processes; development of training and compliance materials.
  2. Interpret NCAA rules and pursue waivers and appeals with the NCAA and conference office.  Update handbooks and policy manuals as needed.
  3. Provide assistance in planning compliance staff meetings for the athletics department, registrar’s office, admissions and financial aid and provide ongoing compliance education to the coaching staff.
  4. Ensure compliance with the NCAA and conference office, and act as liaison with the Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, Admissions and the Faculty Athletics Representative.
  5. Responsible for verification of eligibility for new and continuing student-athletes.  In that role, serve as liaison with NCAA Eligibility Center, and coordinate verification with Faculty Athletics Representative and Financial Aid Director to ensure that all student-athlete related academic and financial aid issues are properly addressed by Athletics Department administration and coaches.
  6. Work with FAR to identify student-athletes who are required to participate in Study Hall each semester. 
  7. Work with coaches to obtain accurate weekly records of Study Hall participation/attendance.
  8. Track and record Study Hall attendance to ensure adherence to Study Hall participation policy.
  9. Work with FAR and Learning Center to help facilitate tutoring sessions, especially for groups of student-athletes and specific classes as necessary.
  10. Consult with coaches regarding recruiting plans, strategies and athletic scholarship budgeting.  Manage the National Letter of Intent and Athletics Aid process for each sport.
  11. Assist the Sr. Associate Athletics Director in coordinating the completion of all external reports required by the NCAA, Board of Education and the university, including but not limited to:  EADA Report, NCAA Academic Success Report, Academic Tracking Report, Sports Sponsorship Report and Financial Data Report.

Administration

  1. Participate in decisions regarding gender equity issues and other issues affecting student-athletes’ welfare, and assist in the development and implementation of a gender equity action plan.
  2. Assist in working with campus Title IX coordinator and conference compliance officer to review department programs and ensure that they are in keeping with Title IX requirements.
  3. Provide managerial and administrative leadership for the athletics department.  This involves supervision of game management staff, and student-employees.
  4. Assist in the oversight of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

Operations

  1. Serve on the Game Operations Committee to participate in the development and improvement of all procedures related to Game Management and Operations.
  2. Assist in oversight of the athletics department operations and game management.
  3. Make recommendations and implement program improvements for home events, and daily operations and processes.

Other

  1. Manage or assist with recruitment, training, and supervision of departmental personnel.
  2. Other duties as assigned.

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing compliance and/or Athletics operations related programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to proficiently utilize NCAA CA software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be willing and able to drive departmental vehicles (and have a clean driving record evidenced by a positive DMV pull)
  • Must have the ability to work within a group setting with peers from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's  or Doctorate degree
  • Previous athletics administration experience in an College or University setting
  • Previous compliance experience within the NCAA Division I, II or NAIA framework
  • Experience with ARMS compliance software
