Summary

This staff member will be primarily responsible for managing all access services operations, including circulation, interlibrary loan (ILL), and general collection maintenance. This position works closely with the Collection Management Services staff concerning maintenance and workflow issues and assignments and provides reference services to students, faculty, and other university patrons. This position is the welcoming face of the library and the librarian most critical to the day-to-day service provided to the STU community. When patrons, whether students or faculty, arrive at the library, they will be efficiently and effectively addressed by the Access Services Librarian and the team they supervise, ensuring that all patron library needs are met and addressed.

Circulation

  • Ensure that the circulation workflow is integrated with that of the library, coordinating with other librarians and staff.
  • Determine, implement, and review circulation policies and procedures. Communicate them to students, faculty, and library patrons.
  • Organize and direct overdue notices.
  • Provide training to library staff and patrons in the use of library systems and the library's online public access catalog.
  • Stay up to date on any upgrades to library systems and ensure that the staff is appropriately trained to use the upgrades.
  • Assist students with printing needs, and ensure that printers are stocked with paper and are functioning correctly. Communicate with OIT (Office of Information Technology) to report malfunctions or problems with network access.
  • Oversee the check-in and checkout of library materials of various formats, including that of study rooms.
  • Schedule circulation and reference shifts to meet library needs.
  • Hire and train student workers to assist with Circulation department functions.
  • Participate in general reference & research services as part of regular workflow, including regular shifts at the reference desk.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Oversee all elements of the ILL workflow.
  • Assist in updating ILL lending and borrowing records in the library ILS, maintaining files, and receiving and returning ILL materials.
  • Assist in the training and supervising of student workers in charge of circulation functions, including circulation desk support, retrieving material from the shelves, making photocopies, and returning materials.
  • Coordinate with the student journals regarding source-checking requests obtained via ILL
  • Maintain and submit monthly statistics reports of ILL activities.
  • Provide statistical information for SACSCOC purposes as requested by the University Librarian, Associate Librarian, Provost or college deans.

Collection Maintenance

  • Coordinate and supervise shelving, shelf reading, and shifting of the library collection as needed.
  • Recommend the replacement or discard of damaged and obsolete library materials.

Other duties

  • Collect and report statistical data related to collection use, circulation desk transactions and building use.
  • Represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested. Serve on University Committees as requested.
  • Reference duties as assigned.
  • Keep informed of new trends in access services and the law profession.
  • Report to the Librarian any issues with the building.
  • Keep inventory of supplies and order supplies when they are needed.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises all employees of the access services department and is responsible for the performance management and evaluation of the employees within that department.

Employees of the department are predominantly work-study student employees and graduate assistants. This position also involves overseeing the opening and closing of the library. Also, reporting to the supervisor or maintenance deptment any building issues that may arise.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; push library carts full of books; climb on stands to shelf books. The employee must occasionally lift of move library materials and supplies, up to 30 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Typical hours would be 11:30 am to 7:00 pm. This position occasionally requires schedule changes with weekend/evening hours.

Travel

Travel is primarily for Professional Development. The employee will be asked to represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested by the Library Director.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school program is required.

 

Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Three or more years of experience in library science is preferred.
