SUMMARY

The School Nurse plays a pivotal role in the general medical oversight of the students of Answers Academy. This position understands and promotes the standards and policies of the school and provides leadership as standards and policies are created, changed, and implemented. The Nurse takes an active part in the full life of the school year-round to create a positive environment for students’ academic, spiritual, and social-emotional learning.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provision of direct health care to students and staff, under the Medical Director’s guidance.
    • Provides care to students and staff who need emergency care due to injury or who present with an acute illness.
    • Within the nurse’s scope of practice and Kentucky State laws, trains, and delegates to unlicensed school personnel medication administration and/or the delivery of health services as ordered by AiG’s Medical Director.
    • Assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic medical conditions.
    • Attends field trips as needed/requested.
    • Coordinates care and student emergency action plans related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies, and use of emergency medications i.e., Epi-Pen, Glucagon, and Diastat.
    • Obtains parental consent for health services.
    • Develop an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for children with chronic disease.
  • Provides leadership for the provision of health services.
    • Assures that school district policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice.
    • Serves on advisory committees/consultation for health accommodations necessary to support student individual education care plans, (i.e., 504 & IEP).
    • Assists with the development of school emergency response plans for emergencies and disasters and the training of staff to respond appropriately within applicable state laws.
    • Develops plans/implements plans and evaluates responses to interventions.
  • Promotes a healthy school environment.
    • Provides staff educational in-services (but not limited to), i.e., CPR training and OSHA bloodborne pathogen and infection control updates.
    • Monitors immunizations and reports communicable diseases as required by law.
    • Review immunization records for compliance with state laws and school policies.
    • Assesses the physical environment of the school to improve health and safety, including the assessment of playground, and indoor air quality evaluation or review patterns of illness or injury to determine source of concern.
    • Assists in the evaluation of the school's emotional environment to decrease potential bullying and violence and/or an environment that is not conducive to optimal mental health and learning.
  • Promotes Health
    • Provides health education information directly to individual students, groups of students, or classes by providing guidance and consultation about health education curriculum.
    • Promotes health awareness activities such as fairs for staff and families, consultation with other school staff, i.e., food service personnel or physical education teachers, regarding healthy lifestyles, and staff wellness programs.
    • Serves as a member of the coordinated school health team that promotes the health and well-being of school members through collaborative efforts.
  • Serves in a leadership role for health policies and programs.
    • Provides leadership in the development and evaluation of school health policies, programs, and the promotion of a healthy school environment through collaboration with coordinated school health programs.
    • Oversees the collection of health data and submission of health reports as required by law.
  • Record Management
    • Track immunization records, as needed, and keep them up to date.
    • Maintain active records for sports physicals as appropriate.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the School Administrator or EMS Manager.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Currently licensed in Kentucky as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other productivity tools.
  • Healthcare Provider Level CPR/BLS and First Aid Certification.
  • CPR/AED & Basic First Aid Instructor Preferred.
  • 3-5 years working in a school environment preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure from the students, workload, and employees.
  • Skills to organize ideas, time, materials, and space with attention to details to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
  • Outstanding skills at using technology and Microsoft Office Suite appropriately and efficiently.
