Job Summary

This full-time Addiction & Recovery Counselor position is responsible for screening, assessment and treatment planning of participants who are receiving services to address substance use disorders. This position will work closely with the participant’s peer mentor, case manager, and community partners as needed to provide care coordination services. Additionally, the Addiction & Recovery Counselor will facilitate group counseling sessions, maintain a caseload, and meet weekly for clinical supervision and multidisciplinary staff meetings.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizes and manages schedule using EHR system effectively to maintain a minimum of 50% of working hours spent providing direct face-to-face services with BTC participants.
  • Delivers culturally informed individual, family and group counseling services congruent with BTC clinical orientation.
  • Maintains fidelity to evidence-based treatment models adopted by BTC.
  • Conducts substance use disorder screenings, assessments, provides diagnoses and makes decisions surrounding client care and support needs using standardized instruments, including the ASAM and DSM-V criteria.
  • Identifies individuals’ mental health concerns for referral and further assessment. If the employee is a Qualified Mental Health Professional: conducts mental health assessments and makes diagnoses using DSM-V criteria.
  • Identifies and refers individuals for other services such as psychiatric, medical, educational, vocational,
  • and recreational.
  • Develops individualized treatment plans for BTC participants in consultation with the participant, the participant’s family (whenever appropriate) and representatives of BTC partner organizations.
  • Completes and maintains accurate and same-day treatment documentation including individual service notes; services and supports plans; assessments; and service conclusion summaries that meet OAR/Medicaid standards of care.
  • Completes ACORN screening at each individual counseling session.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with community partners and BTC staff members regarding each participant’s progress.
  • Provides direct oversight of counseling interns in collaboration with Clinical Supervisor.
  • Abides by organization policies and procedures, confidentiality laws, professional boundaries and relevant federal/state treatment regulations and standards.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the minimum levels required to successfully perform the Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities.

  • CADCI certification, required
  • State ORCHARDS BCU background check clearance, required     
  • Experience with substance use counseling, preferred
  • Skilled in provision of individual and group counseling using respect and compassion.
  • Skilled in rapport building, engagement and motivational interviewing approaches.
  • Knowledge of at-risk populations and ability to serve such populations using evidence-based practices.
  • Well-developed clinical documentation skills and a strong commitment to quality management; ability to write accurate and concise reports while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Computer literate; functional ability with Microsoft products
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR), such as Carelogic preferred.
  • Demonstrated success at working effectively in a diverse, collaborative team environment, with skills in promoting inclusion and cultural responsiveness.
  • Experience in collaborating with community partners and building partnerships to improve outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, trauma informed approach and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to always maintain high professional standards with participants, staff, and community partners.

Working Conditions

Environment and Physical Requirements: The Addiction & Recovery Counselor works in an office environment, other site locations including program housing, and may occasionally visit community partner locations. The work location is based on where the program where services are delivered and are subject to a variety of environmental weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, and dust. The position frequently requires daily travel by car. The Addiction & Recovery Counselor interacts constantly with staff, visitors, program participants, government agencies, and others. The position stands, walks, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours. The incumbent must be able to lift, push, pull and move files and equipment in excess of 15 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically forty hours per week with flexibility in scheduling, based on business need. The Addiction & Recovery Counselor position also travels occasionally and may be required to work extended hours including evening, weekend and/or holiday work as job duties demand.
