The Facilities Specialist performs a wide variety of custodial and facilities duties including cleaning, light maintenance, grounds support and building project support. This is a cross-functional position that assists with landscape projects, lawn care, snow removal, lighting maintenance, minor plumbing repairs, painting, demolition, recycling, product inventory, renovations and custodial tasks as necessary to support daily operations.  

Major Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial tasks as required to ensure building cleanliness meets established standards.
  • Ensure daily room set-ups align with ministry timing and expectations
  • Maintain the recycling program to include routine waste collection, bin organization and vendor pick-up coordination
  • Report, prioritize and execute observed building repairs, safety concerns and extra cleaning tasks
  • Operate lawn care equipment such as a zero-turn mower, push mowers, weed whips and blowers
  • Operate snow removal vehicles including various plows, a utility broom and salter tractor
  • Assist with landscape projects including, but not limited to mulching, stone/gravel repairs, lawn repairs, tree trimming and pond maintenance.  
  • Lighting maintenance including fixture repairs, ballast/bulb changes and inventory management
  • Minor restroom repairs/replacements including toilets, flush valves, faucets and electronic dispensers
  • Support renovation projects including demolition, furniture installation, material handling and painting
  • Assist with security and office renovation project wiring installations
  • Reports and responds to emergency assistance calls
  • Responds to service requests, coordinates resources and implements the set up and take down of furniture and equipment for a wide variety of church and community events.
  • Serve as shift lead in absence of the Facilities Director or Ground Supervisor
  • Direct the work of volunteers, community service participants and short-term, non-continuing employees as needed

  • Learn the proper application, safe handling and safe use of a variety of building chemicals
  • Prioritize and execute assigned work in a timely manner while achieving high quality results
  • Safely operate a variety of manual and powered equipment and vehicles
  • Perform physical labor without limitations
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions under general supervision
  • Work efficiently independently or in a team capacity
  • Build and maintain cooperative, healthy and positive working relationships with staff and volunteers while demonstrating sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population, work effectively in and around the public within large and small group ministry and event settings.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods of maintaining, cleaning and preserving a variety of surfaces such as walls, carpeting, glass, tile and wood
  • Proper use, handling and disposal of a wide range of chemicals according to state and federal regulations
  • General security and safety practices
  • Handling and disposal of blood borne pathogens with care
  • Lawn care and snow removal equipment and techniques
  • Plumbing and lighting fixtures and related maintenance repairs

Education & Experience:

Possess any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • High school graduate
  • One year of custodial experience in a school setting is preferred.
  • General experience with electricity, plumbing and building equipment is a plus

License or Certificate:

  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Special Requirements:

  • Commitment to living out discipleship attributes, connecting, gathering, serving, giving and multiplying.
  • Perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
  • Work safely in an environment containing a variety of chemicals, construction materials, dust and noise
  • Work under inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow removal).
  • Possess some general mechanical aptitude or demonstrate a willingness to learn new technical skills

 

Employment Information

This position is full-time, hourly and classified as nonexempt, 40 hours/week

Salary – dependent on experience, skills & education

Paid Time Off (PTO) – Full-time employees are eligible to earn PTO.  PTO is accrued on a calendar year basis.  Refer to the Staff Handbook for specific details. 

 

403b – Employees are eligible to participate in the 403b pension plan if they are scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week.  Entry dates for the 403b plan is the first of the month following the date of hire.  On an employee’s first anniversary, Elmbrook will match up to 2%.

 

Holidays – Full-time employees are eligible for holiday pay. Refer to the Staff Handbook for specific details.

 

Reporting Structure

The Facilities Specialist will be accountable and report directly to the Facilities Director of Elmbrook Church.
