JOB SUMMARY

The Electric Superintendent position includes administrative and highly technical functions and is responsible for ensuring safety and uniform practices and policies related to the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment, wiring systems and meters, and the supervision of Utility staff assigned to the electric division. Reports to the Utility Manager – Electric.

 

Hiring Range:            $82,709.39 - $86,844.86 annually (Depending on qualifications)
 
Work Days/Hours:    Monday – Friday
                                    8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, recommending discipline, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates daily work activities; assigns work, monitors status of work in progress, and inspects completed work; confers with assigned staff and assists with complex/problem situations; provides technical expertise; coordinates staff training activities.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Organizes and prioritizes department workload; coordinates work schedules to provide adequate coverage at events; makes work assignments; monitors work in progress and inspects completed work.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Utility Director, Electric Utility Manager, contractors, and other personnel in the form of regular meetings.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the quality, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of crews, service delivery methods and procedures; work with subordinates on the continuous improvement of City services; encourage their involvement in quality initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Technical or advanced coursework in or equivalent in electrical field operations or electric meter; supplemented by seven (7) years of related experience; and one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience responsible experience in electric utility, electric distribution systems, construction, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.

 

Integrated Transmission System Operator Certification.

 

Special Requirements:

Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

 

Requires pre-employment medical evaluation and satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance DOT federal regulations.

 

This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in electrical installation and repair work and in the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission lines, safety practices and regulations applying to low and high voltage electrical wires.
  • Knowledge of pertinent first-aid principles and techniques including resuscitation methods.
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and organizing work; ability to handle multiple work assignments and deadlines efficiently, accurately, and professionally; skill in planning, prioritizing, organizing, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  • Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations and customer service; excellent oral and written communication skills to satisfactorily resolve conflicts and issues; to explain established policies and procedures to employees and the general public.
  • Ability to perform electrical installation and repair work and to construct and maintain electric distribution and transmission lines.
  • Ability to understand, follow and give oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and professional relationships with all levels of management to include representatives from other departments and organizations. 
  • Ability to effectively manage, organize and supervise department employees; ability to give clear instructions; monitor and assess operations and on-call scheduling, workload, projects, and staff performance.
  • Ability to work from electrical plans and detailed drawings, effectively train and supervise others.
  • Ability to attend meetings outside of scheduled work hours or required to report after work hours during times of emergencies and/or disasters.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force. Work requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an office and an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
