Summary: Under the direction of the Manager of Fitness, the Fitness Coordinator supports the operations related to the development and implementation of wellness programs in group exercise, pre-registered fitness classes, and any other service aimed to improve the fitness experience for the members and residents of Highland Park. The Fitness Coordinator is a team-player and inspirational leader through dynamic programming, innovation, effective communication, time management, promotion, and education aimed at establishing and maintaining relationships for long-term participation. The Fitness Coordinator contributes to the overall success of the membership goals at the Recreation Center by embodying the mission, vision, and values of the Park District of Highland Park to provide welcoming, caring, and extraordinary experiences.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and evaluate innovative group exercise and fitness programs that respond to individual student/member program preferences and industry trends that encourage healthy lifestyles.
  • Develop and distribute the Group Exercise schedule(s), using Group Ex Pro and paper schedules including scheduling instructors and reserving rooms by utilizing the Rec Trac Facility Schedule software.
  • Responsible for working with the Manager of Fitness in the development, implementation, and ongoing supervision of group exercise evaluations, surveys, and other means of gathering feedback and quality control to ensure member and participant needs and expectations are being met.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Fitness and the Membership Services Supervisor in the development, implementation, and ongoing group fitness programs, pop-up promotions, and events that attract and integrate new members, build relationships, and help to retain members.
  • Plans with the Marketing Department for dissemination of news releases, flyers, and other public relations and promotional materials as they relate to this area of responsibility.
  • Monitor Group Exercise check-ins for accuracy in reporting and access control.
  • Produces weekly Group Ex e-newsletter, RC Beat, through marketing campaign software.
  • Create live and schedule social media posts, manage, maintain, and monitor content and responses on social media sites to improve public relations and communications for members/community.
  • Troubleshoot stereo systems when needed for group fitness classes to ensure extraordinary fitness experiences. Request service as needed.
  • Maintain a positive attitude in working with the Recreation Center Management team, full and part-time staff, members of the Recreation Center, and all members and residents of Highland Park.
  • Regularly communicate with the Fitness Manager and Membership Services Supervisor regarding member related projects, concerns, or feedback given by members related to the overall membership experience.
  • Enter and manage payroll for all group exercise and pre-registered instructors in Paycom.
  • Recruit, hire, train, conduct in-service training, and evaluate group exercise instructors. Meet with employees to resolve work-related issues.
  • Make recommendations regarding purchase of equipment that would impact group exercise operations.
  • Specific Duties Include
    • Assist in onsite management by serving as Manager on Duty.
    • May be assigned to work as a Fitness Desk Attendant and assist at the Registration Desk as needed, personnel supervision, and facility tours, as needed.
    • Maintain appropriate standards of care and safety.
    • Assist inventory reports.
    • Maintain certifications and CEU's pertinent to the position.
    • Verify and monitor certifications and CEU's of all group exercise instructors.
    • Maintain an organized workspace.
    • Teach a minimum of four (4) group exercise classes per week.
  • Know and follow emergency action procedures. Assist other personnel in emergency situations.
  • Performs other Park District-related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has direct supervisory responsibility for all Group Exercise and Specialty Program Instructors.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of fitness leadership and supervision
  • 1-3 years of professional fitness programming experience
  • 3+ years of group fitness instructor work experience with multiple formats.
  • Professional public communication skills
  • Excellent administration experience including Microsoft office proficiency.
  • Strong social media and promotional marketing experiences
  • A passion for crafting welcoming, caring, and extraordinary experiences.
  • Maintain at least one nationally recognized Group Instructor or Personal Training certification.
  • Ability to perform an aerobic activity for duration of a class, which may include, but not limited to,
  • standing, walking, climbing, balancing, running, crawling, and kneeling.
  • Ability to routinely lift 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds.
  • Ability to perform exercises specific to the assigned class.
  • Ability to perform physical activity including standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms,
  • climbing or balancing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
  • Ability to lift more than 20lbs.
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • Minimum of one of the NCCA Accredited Group Exercise Certifications
  • Minimum of two additional Group Exercise Specialty Course Certifications

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in Sports or Fitness Management, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or Parks & Recreation from a four-year college or university preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Must have a proven track record for providing excellent customer service, building relationships with community members, and displaying passion in serving the community. Should have at least 1– 3 years of relevant work experience in supervising programs and services as well as the ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities and meet deadlines. Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and have strong organizational skills.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of PC computers and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with RecTrac registration software a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: American Red Cross CPR/AED certification and NCCA Accredited Certification in Group Fitness or Personal Training
