Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Phlebotomist/Clinical Assistant to join our team!

 

JOB SUMMARY:       

Responsible for assisting with all patient care: clerical and clinical. He/she communicates with providers/nurse/manager/co-workers as appropriate, about changes in patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic evaluation and changes in patient condition or symptomatology. Assists with scheduling of procedures. Order, collects, and processes routine and specialty testing for patients within the office. Collects blood samples ensuring proper patient identification and labeling samples.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ability to use manual dexterity to perform medical treatments
    2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations
    3. Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patients
    4. Ability to elicit information needed to make brief evaluations
    5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as clinical notes and physician orders
    6. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
    7. Ability to identify potential exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
    8. Accurately room patients; take an adequate patient history; obtain accurate vital signs, collecting urine and blood specimen, ensuring proper patient identification and labeling of samples, and accurately enter all information into Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in a timely manner.
    9. Accurately and timely assists physician or provider during medical exam and procedure and prepare test and prescription requisitions according to physician orders as requested.
    10. Proficient in clerical responsibilities including: sending/receiving/retaining patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments and procedures; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately; obtain pre-authorization as needed.
    11. Accurately check schedules and organize patient flow; perform screenings per provider guidelines; relaying instructions to patients; answering calls and accurately identifying patient’s problem or need and provides pertinent information, documents conversations, evaluates and assesses patient’s symptoms and consulting with providers as needed.
    12. Performs facility responsibilities as assigned which may include: setting up equipment according to department protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment, cleaning/sterilizing equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control, rooms stocked with medical supplies and keep inventory according to departments acceptable par level.
    13. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity and serves as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
    14. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
    15. Performs in office procedures such as capsule endoscopy and Fibroscans, others as necessary.
    16. Knowledge of equipment, supplies, materials need for treatment, infectious disease management, control and safety standards, telephone based clinical assessment techniques, medical practice triage protocols and appropriate home health information for patients to follow until visit with physician.
    17. Consults other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
    18. Orients and mentors new staff members. Shows good customer service on phone and in person to anyone that enters the facility.
    19. Maintains Point of Care documents and performs Quality Control management
    20. Responsible for scheduling patients for upcoming procedures or imaging per provider orders or requests.
    21. Responsible for preparing all necessary patient consent forms, hospital orders, obtaining doctor’s signatures, faxing completed orders to requested facility.
    22. Verifies insurance coverage, obtains proper prior authorizations, obtains proper CPT codes and diagnostic codes, documents information for billing purposes within Cerner.
    23. Answers incoming calls to the facility in a professional, timely manner.
    24. Proficiency in collecting correct blood samples and other body fluids, ensuring proper patient identification and labeling of samples.
    25. Follows hospital policies and procedures for transporting and delivering samples to laboratory.
    26. Knowledge of handling laboratory supplies and stocks supplies.
    27. Ensure that patients receive appropriate competent and quality clinical care and that customer service meets patient’s expectation.
    a. Adherence by staff to all policy and procedures.
    b. Provides age appropriate care.
    c. Reporting monitoring and management of patient and staff incidents.
    d. Monitoring and management of patient and physician satisfaction results.
    28. Follows standards precautions using personal protective equipment as required. Knowledge and performance of sterile tech.
    29. Organize requisitions received for collection, Maintains records of tests performed. Scanning orders and lab results into electronic medical system, print and fax lab reports to ordering doctor.
    30. Maintains strict quality control for procedures.

    32. Performs miscellaneous tasks that promote smooth operations or other duties as deemed necessary.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:   Certification as a Medical Assistant if applicable. High school diploma or equivalent required.

 

Experience:  CMA course preferred, phlebotomy course or 6 months phlebotomy experience

 

Equipment/Technology:  Basic computer and typing skills. Ability to use various software programs and procedure software, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and other nursing items. May involve use of walkers, wheelchairs, pulse oximetry and oxygen tanks.

 

Language/Communication: Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Bilingual is a plus. Must understand basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. Must have the ability to speak effectively to patients, their family members, referring offices, insurance companies, diagnostic and surgical facilities via phone, fax, computerized ordering systems and in person.

 

Mathematical Skills:  Basic skills required.

 

Mental Capabilities:   Able to follow basic commands and learn how to operate an electronic medical record in a proper and accurate manner. Stress can be triggered by workload, difficult patients, high volume of calls and emergencies.

 

Performance:  Skills in reading and following written and oral medical orders, ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed, multitasking, triaging decisions and responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
