Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Licensed Practical Nurse/Registered Nurse to join our team!

 

JOB SUMMARY:       

The endoscopy nurse provides nursing care to patients being admitted for endoscopic procedures as well as following discharge from the endoscopy procedure room in either an asleep but arrousable post procedure state or an awake post sedation state through discharge to home.  During the admission process the nursing role focuses on assessing, identifying, and solving nursing care and pre-procedure problems.  The nurse is responsible for starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-procedure medications, performing pre-procedure instruction and explanation of the patient’s rights and procedures.  During the recovery phase upon discharge from the endoscopy suite, the nurse is responsible for monitoring vital signs, providing pain management, providing patient and family education, and ensuring the safety of the patient until discharge into the vehicle of a responsible driver.  He/she must facilitate and demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The LPN/RN Endoscopy Admitting/Recovery:

  1. Maintains area in a state of readiness at all times, ensuring that all necessary equipment is available and in good working order, with age specific supplies ready to use as needed.
  2. Assesses physical and emotional needs of patients and implements appropriate nursing interventions. Completes the nursing pre-assessment record, including confirmation of the following:
    • Allergies.
    • Medications taken at home.
    • Dentures, contact lenses and glasses.
    • Pertinent medial conditions listed.
    • Pertinent past medical history listed.
    • Confirmations of consent and operative site.
    • Confirmation of responsible party and ride home.
    • Confirmation or ordered labs/test results on chart
  3. Respects the patient’s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
  4. Assists the patient in undressing if needed and stores belongings appropriately. Apply drawsheet to bed for turning during the procedure.
  5. Assess or performs the following.           
    • Vital signs.
    • Weight and height.
    • Accu-Check for blood sugar if applicable.
    • Pregnancy test, if applicable.
    • Starts IV on all patients, except those who have an order not to start an IV. Utilizes anesthesia protocol regarding IV fluids and catheter size.
    • Pain level
  6. Ensures that patients are seen by the anesthesia provider prior to being taken to the endoscopy suite if physician has ordered procedure to be done by anesthesia provider.
  7. Performs pre-operative instruction and explanation of procedures and patient’s rights.
  8. Sets priorities to facilitate the timely and efficient flow of patients throughout the day.
  9. Assess patients on admission to Post sedation Recovery for the following:
    • Respirations
    • Vital Signs
    • Level of Pain
    • Level of consciousness
  10. Assess and records vital signs every 15 minutes.
  11. Uses appropriate devices and techniques to assist patient’s respirations and maintains optimum blood oxygen saturation.
  12. Assess surgical site for bleeding, reinforce dressing as needed, and notify physician of any increased drainage.
  13. Able to assess and treat post-operative pain effectively.
  14. Proficient knowledge of drugs used in the PACU, Phase II
  15. Positions patient as ordered by physician.
  16. Assesses and records intake and output of all fluids.
  17. Carries out physicians/anesthesiologist orders.
  18. Assess patient for discharge when criteria is met, i.e. stable vital signs, adequate pain control, and adequate p.o. intake of fluids, alert and oriented.
  19. Responds appropriately to emergency situations, recognizing the need for assistance and obtaining support from anesthesia personnel and/or physician as needed.
  20. Records pertinent patient information on the nurse’s notes.
  21. Demonstrates an economic use of equipment and supplies.
  22. Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient’s rights are protected.
  23. Demonstrates commitment to excellence in patient, family and physician relations.
  24. Communicates appropriate information to other members of the healthcare team in a timely manner.
  25. Acts as the nursing advocate for the patient by upholding patient rights.
  26. Participates in overall Endoscopy Department functions, including, but not limited to:
    • Follows appropriate Pre-procedure, Admitting and Recovery Procedures.
    • Training new staff as needed,
    • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
    • Attends annual education in-services as required.
    • Is knowledgeable about and responsive to emergency situations, i.e. cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, drug reaction, fire, disaster, etc.
  27. Complies with attendance requirements.
  28. Demonstrates an awareness of safe conditions and safe acts as related to hospital employment.
  29. Maintains professional competency through appropriate continuing education.
  30. Adheres to and practices MVH Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  31. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current licensure as a Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse in the state of Idaho. Current BLS certification.

 

Experience: One year of general nursing experience preferred.

 

Equipment/Technology: Basic computer knowledge.

 

Language/Communication: Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and speak English.

 

Mathematical Skills: General high school math.

 

Mental Capabilities: Can frequently and consistently make sound judgments. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Can adapt to rapidly changing work due to changes in the census.

 

Interpersonal: Works well with others.

 

Performance: Can work well under pressure and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
