Mountain View Hospital is looking for an Emergency Services Manager to join our team!

JOB SUMMARY:       

The Emergency Services Manager provides clinical oversight for the care provided by all staff within the Emergency Department working in conjunction with the Medical Director.  Areas of responsibility include Operational and Capital budgets, quality control and improvement, program development and departmental education. The Emergency Services Manager plays an important role in the nursing department, ensuring nursing operations are smooth and effective in their health care facility and/or department. They provide administrative support to the department by overseeing daily operations of their units and ensure proper care is provided for all patients. Specific day-to-day tasks relaying information to doctors, communicating with various health care professionals, providing information strategic goals, assisting nursing staff with various problems, and resolving patient complaints. Additionally, the manager plays a crucial role in ensuring proper training and educating of the nursing staff, which typically includes performing orientations, coordinating regular staff training, conducting staff meetings, and identifying areas for training. It also consists of meeting with administrators and staff educators, gathering staff feedback, and coordinating internships and preceptorships. This job also includes human resource management, as supervisors are often involved in recruiting and hiring nursing staff; they also play a large part in retaining high-quality staff through effective management. They help address staff issues or concerns, identify and help resolve interpersonal conflicts among staff, and address behavioral problems among individual employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Manager must be able to function in the role as an ER nurse/Charge nurse as well as:

  1. Coordinate clinical staff requirements and ensure that all staff are current in their licensure and education.
  2. Collaborate with the administration and staff frequently regarding problem solving/issue resolution and process improvement that will impact unit performance and work flow.
  3. Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team and other departments to resolve issues and improve work flow processes throughout the department and ensure safe patient care.
  4. Participate and collaborate in the interview process for new applicants.
  5. Have the ability to work with, mentor, and coach new staff to help them progress in their career and professional development including preceptors to meet the needs of incoming staff.
  6. Review and/or create competencies and requirements for the department to ensure that quality assurance is met. Validation of competencies to ensure that workload demands within the unit are covered.
  7. Evaluate the performance of staff: Nurses and nursing assistants while having the ability to provide ongoing feedback, mentoring, and coaching. Provides feedback at 30, 60, and 90 day evaluations to staff.
  8. Scheduling of staff within the department to best meet the needs of the population of patients. Provides clinical consultation and guidance as needed to facilitate patient care.
  9. Participates in the review of occurrence reports and is able to document findings and assist with follow-up to staff.
  10. Can recognize issues and concerns within the unit and can assist with generating a plan for remediation and process improvement while acting as patient advocate.
  11. Will assist staff with patient care concerns to help with quality patient care.
  12. Will lead and participate in remediation discussions with staff related to attitude and/or performance.
  13. Will help to maintain standards of care, policy, and procedure that will generate positive results upon audit of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  14. Other projects and duties as directed by the Emergency Services Department manager.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: A current unencumbered Idaho Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.  Basic Life Support (BLS), at time of hire.   Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).  If these certifications are not current, they must be attained within 90 days of hire.

Experience: Requires two years of Emergency Department experience, and a minimum of one year leadership, management or education experience. It is at the managers discretion to determine eligibility for those interested in this position who may be exceptional performers but do not hold the required experience.

Equipment/Technology: Basic computer knowledge and is able to demonstrate understanding of basic computer documentation systems as needed. Has the ability to learn and teach competence based education to staff on the unit.

Language/Communication: Has the ability to communicate effectively and clearly with many different people (patients, families, visitors, members of the interdisciplinary team and others).

Mathematical Skills: Knowledge of basic nursing medication calculations and the ability to educate nursing staff regarding medication calculations.

Mental Capabilities: Has the ability to apply the critical thinking process. Able to function in a high stress environment and is able to prioritize information related to safe patient care, to treatment plans, and follow-up.

Interpersonal: Has the ability to collaborate within the many different areas necessary but can independently reference essential material. Is able to establish good working relationships with those around them.
