Qualifications

Position Summary: 

The Cost Estimator is responsible for leading the estimating effort for Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) industrial plant projects. They are responsible for the development of a thorough and accurate cost estimate including labor, equipment, material, bulks, transportation & logistics, expenses, and other incidentals associated with new plant sales, global solutions and aftermarket projects.  DRI plant industrial projects can vary in type, size, complexity and level of risk. The Cost Estimator will have a complete understanding and wide application of principles, concepts, best practices and standards in industrial cost estimating. Responsibilities include significant and detailed interface with Project Managers, Project Engineers, Engineering, Commercial, Procurement, Proposal Engineering, Executive Management, etc.

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Extensive knowledge and application of standardized cost estimating methodology in accordance with American or International recognized cost estimating professional organization.   

  • Lead preparation of all detailed cost estimates for proposals, studies and value engineering for DRI industrial plant projects.   

  • Thorough understanding of cost estimate accuracy levels and the different requirements for each level. 

  • Frequent interaction with engineering, proposal team, purchasing, project group, and commercial department personnel on matters involving cost estimates related to plant sales, aftermarket, research  & development, and/or active projects. 

  • Ability to read and comprehend extensive Requests for Proposal (RFP) and to translate that into a comprehensive cost estimate. 

  • Fluent in reading and performing takeoffs utilizing P&ID’s, engineering drawings, equipment and other lists or other relevant technical documents.   

  • Review and confirm estimates with departmental chiefs, project management, procurement, and the sales team.  

  • Along with the Manager of Project Controls, prepare and present the official cost review to departmental management and Senior/Executive management. 

  • Establish estimated Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), related dictionaries and Basis of Estimates (BOEs). 

  • Evaluate incoming cost estimates, quotes and other relevant data for accuracy and completeness. 

  • Collect, analyze, store and maintain detailed data sets for historical comparisons and use for future estimating. 

  • Develop and distribute cost control budgets from the as sold estimate and report to Project Controls personnel for inputs/distributions into the ERP system and Primavera P6 (Scheduling Software). 

  • Develop and present financial models that accurately forecast the project's cash flow requirements, ensuring efficient resource allocation and maintaining a positive cash position throughout the project's lifecycle. 

 

Skills/Abilities:  

Required: 

  • Minimum of six (6) years of hands-on experience estimating within an industrial engineering and procurement sector, preferably iron and steel, or other related industries. 

  • Knowledge and experience using cost estimating software platforms.  Expert level proficiency of MS Excel is also required. 

  • Requires confident professional with very strong interpersonal, oral and written skills whom is comfortable presenting estimates to senior and executive team members. 

 

Preferred: 

  • AACE International Certifications: Certified Estimating Professional (CEP); Certified Cost Professional (CCP).  

  • Project Management Institute (PMI): Project Management Professional (PMP).  

  • Estimating tools: Aspen Capital Cost Estimator, Cleopatra Enterprise, CostOS, ProEst). 

 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or Construction Management. 

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or Construction Management. 

  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years in a relevant engineering, estimating, or construction role. Applicants with extensive experience as a Senior Cost Estimator are encouraged to apply. 

 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required (~5%).   

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Ability to move around a project site, including climbing structures.
