Job Summary

The Phlebotomist provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care service to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons under direction of a physician or nurse in Medical Centers.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist with daily patient flow in areas as needed.
  • Gives direct patient care and performs indirect patient care activities and laboratory tests, under the direction of a physician or nurse.
  • Take appropriate action to maintain a safe and aesthetic environment.
  • Performs EKG and maintains a log.
  • Transports patients to another department by means of wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Performs lab work as per physician orders and prepares instrumental equipment for sterilization.
  • Communicates observations of a patient's status to the nurse-in-charge.
  • Responsible for ordering medical supplies according to the department's needs.
  • Adheres to Nursing Department policies and procedures.
  • Participates in meetings of staff and department meetings.
  • Shares acquired knowledge and learning.
  • Checks equipment and supplies prior to use for function, inspection, and expiration date; reports malfunction of medical equipment and safety issues to supervisor.
  • Maintains quality control (i.e. Glucometer, eyewash, refrigerator temperature and autoclave) and cleaning logs as needed for the department.
  • Complies with Infection Control and OSHA Regulations (biomedical wastes, handling, and disposal) for the center as per regulations.
  • Obtain specimens in appropriate containers and labels correctly.
  • Follows medical center guidelines for isolation techniques.
  • Responds politely when addressed, assists in a helpful friendly manner.
  • Consistently reports for duty on time.
  • Keeps patient’s information private and limits conversation of a personal nature in patient’s presence.]
  • Degree of teamwork and cooperation with personnel from other departments. 
  • Maintain a logging system for different procedures as required and enter nursing procedures and other information in the computer system. 
  • Check medical records and follow up obtaining missing results prior to the patient's appointment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Required Experience

  • 1 year in a clinical setting, previous hospital experience and/or physician office experience.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Phlebotomy Certificate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Customer Service skills and training. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Possess the ability to ambulate, position and transfer patients.
  • Demonstrates effective Communication skills with staff members, specific population served and others. 
  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with patients, co-workers, medical staff, visitors, and other health care providers.
  • Possesses the ability to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrates basic care skills.
  • Ability to organize work and follow instructions.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude in dealing effectively with people of all ages. Demonstrates knowledge as it relates to age specific consumer population.
  • Must be able to follow policies and procedures and work a flexible schedule and location. 
  • Able to rotate weekends, holidays, shifts and center location according to company needs.
  • Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • 3 years of experience with background in pediatric (infant and child) and geriatric collection techniques preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • Medical Assistant Certificate preferred.

Physical Demands
