Discover Durham is Durham’s marketing and sales agency, generating economic impact by drawing 13 million leisure, business, and sports visitors to our vibrant community. Discover Durham also operates the Durham Sports Commission (DSC), a 501(c)3 whose mission is to create economic and social impact by leading the community’s efforts to attract, support and promote sporting events at every level as well as Durham Next, another nonprofit organization serving as a visionary community partnership for the sustainable advancement of Durham as the best place to live, work and visit.  

Discover Durham is seeking a Marketing Technology (MarTech) Manager to join our team to provide technical leadership, coordination and support on destination marketing & management activities of Discover Durham, and its two owned and operated non-profits, the Durham Sports Commission and Durham Next (collectively “the organization”). The MarTech Manager will ensure the efficient and effective operation of the organization’s marketing technology platforms and related vendor relationships. This includes oversight, implementation support, monitoring and maintenance of systems such as the CRM, website CMSes and Email Service Providers (ESPs). 

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Platform Ownership & Management 

  • Maintain a deep understanding of the latest advancements in destination marketing technology, including CRM systems, CMSes, marketing automation platforms, and analytics platforms 

  • Serve as the webmaster and primary technical manager of the organization’s flagship websites and visitor-facing apps 

  • Oversee the organization’s customer relationship management (CRM) platform, including organizational trainings, standard operating procedures and overseeing regularly occurring contact audits. 

  • Serve as technical project manager or consultant on new digital projects and major updates to existing MarTech tools 

  • Manage and implement automations in tools such as Discover Durham’s ESPs (HubSpot and Act-On) and other automation flow tools such as Zapier (or competitor alternatives) 

  • Ensure robust web analytics by maintaining, auditing and updating web tracking tags in Google Tag Manager, including development of new tags and custom GA4 events. 

  • Manage the organization’s website domains portfolio and DNS records, including redirects, A-records, MX records and authentication records such as DKIM/DMARC 

  • Manage digital signage and kiosk technologies, including regular updates and vetting & deployment of new solutions that will improve our visitors’ in-market experience. 

  • Manage and deploy dashboards, reports and monitoring systems that give visibility into platform performance and user engagement. 

  • Produce regular reports that drill into user and visitor behavior on various platforms and identify trends and insights that can inform organizational strategy 

  • Produce performance reports as needed from the organization’s key destination management data sources and dashboards (including STR/CoStar) 

  • Vendor & Resource Management 

  • Consult, liaise and translate requirements & action items between external technical vendors and day-to-day internal users 

  • Oversight of technical vendors for specialized projects and initiatives (examples may include GIS consultants, technical SEO consultants, AI vendors, etc.) 

  • Oversee the budget and billing of the organization’s cloud API resources (Google API and AWS) 

  • Ensure third party MarTech projects stay within scope, achieve organizational objectives, and have sufficient interoperability with existing suite of tools & solutions 

  • Internal Technology Coordination & Leadership 

  • Lead on audits of organization’s MarTech tools, such as website accessibility audits, performance audits, etc. 

  • Develop trainings, guides and standard operating procedures for MarTech tools and workflows. 

  • Consult on and implement scalable information architecture (including producing resources such as content models and categorization-schemes/taxonomies) 

  • Identify technical opportunities and secure resources/buy-in by writing requirements and pitching solutions to leadership 

  • Troubleshoot and articulate complex problems and provide solutions or possible approaches 

  • Serve as an organizational leader on emerging technologies, applications and best practices 

  • Coordinate with the Operations/IT team on MarTech projects that tap into broader IT support streams, such as aligning with our MSP 

Qualifications

Required experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Information Technology, Human Computer Interaction, or related field (or commensurate professional experience) 

  • Proven track record of managing technical projects to completion with diverse stakeholders and varied requirements 

  • Experience working with and managing external technical vendor, including drafting and issuing briefs/RFPs 

  • Oversight and technical administration of a CMS or CRM (Simpleview CRM and Craft/WordPress CMS experience preferred) 

  • Experience in troubleshooting technical issues and demonstrating curiosity into how different solutions work and connect 

  • Intermediate HTML and CSS for web content maintenance and troubleshooting web content 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • An understanding of content modeling, taxonomies, and metadata 

  • Existing understanding and experience working with interoperable data transfer formats such as JSON, XML and CSV 

  • Knowledge of digital accessibility standards, specifically WCAG 2.0 AA or higher 

  • Experience with automation solutions (either through an ESP, automation tool like Zapier/Make.com/Pabbly Connect, or similar) 

  • Experience with a reporting or dashboard tool, such Looker Studio, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Qualtrics, or similar
