Job Summary: A Reg 4 Service Technician in California typically works in roles related to inspecting, maintaining, and repairing backflow prevention assemblies in plumbing and water distribution systems. These systems are essential for ensuring the safety of drinking water by preventing contamination from backflow. Reg 4 refers to regulations enforced by water agencies, particularly the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), which governs the installation, testing, and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.  

 

Pay Range:  $25.00/hour - $52.00/hour

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular inspections and testing of backflow prevention assemblies to ensure compliance with local and state regulations. 
  • Accurately document test results and submit them to appropriate regulatory authorities. 
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues in backflow prevention devices. 
  • Perform repairs, replacements, or adjustments to backflow assemblies and other plumbing systems as necessary. 
  • Install new backflow prevention assemblies in compliance with Reg 4 and other relevant codes. 
  • Ensure all installations meet safety standards and pass regulatory inspections. 
  • Communicate with property owners or managers regarding the status of their backflow prevention systems. 
  • Provide recommendations for maintenance or replacement when necessary. 
  • Stay updated on changes to local, state, and federal regulations regarding backflow prevention. 
  • Ensure that all work performed adheres to California’s Department of Health Services (DHS) and local agency standards. 
  • Maintain detailed records of all tests, repairs, and installations performed. 
  • Submit reports to water authorities, like the LADWP, regarding the status and maintenance of backflow systems. 
  • Follow all safety protocols related to plumbing, hazardous materials, and confined spaces. 
  • Ensure that all equipment and tools are properly maintained and in good working condition. 

 

 


 

Qualifications

What We Are Looking For:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Reg 4 Certification: Must be certified by an authorized agency, ie LADWP. 
  • 1-3 years of experience working with backflow prevention systems or similar plumbing work. 
  •  Familiarity with California’s regulations on backflow prevention, such as the California Health and Safety Code and Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations. 
  •  A valid driver’s license is required, as this role involves traveling to various locations. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. 

 

 

 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and is occasionally required to lift and/or move heavy objects.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in various environments, including industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and outdoor settings, which can potentially expose employees to noise, dust, heat stress, thermal stress, low light conditions, heights, etc.
  • Capable of standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces as needed, which would require use of fall protection equipment and other safety devices
  • Capable of using hand and power tools, including specialty tools resulting in cutting, grinding, drilling, fastening and other methods resulting in torque, vibration, noise, etc.
