Description

University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) has an immediate opening for a head coach for our co-ed competitive cheer and spirit program.  The coach is responsible for maintaining a successful collegiate cheerleading and spirit program by managing all aspects of the cheerleading team including skill instruction, recruiting, planning, team management, and other athletic department duties. In addition, the head coach is tasked with developing engagement activities to generate school spirit and awareness in the community.  This is a full-time, year-round position that reports directly to the Assistant Director of Athletics and works with appropriate department staff for administrative sport duties. 

The UHSP Eutectics participate in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) sports as a member of the American Midwest Conference. Teams include men's and women's basketball, golf, soccer, cross-country, track and field, volleyball, co-ed competitive cheer, men’s baseball and rugby, and women's softball and lacrosse.  

  • Using department-established recruiting and roster goals, develop an annual recruiting plan focused on building a sustainable pipeline of student athletes, actively recruit new students, keep and update appropriate records, manage and track team-level athletics scholarships.
  • Define competitive priorities and instruct participants in improving their skills and performance. Establish player and team assessment of skills and gaps, develop comprehensive practice plans, manage practice schedules, demonstrate sport skills and provide feedback to individuals and team designed to provide continuous improvement. Prepare and execute strategy. Utilize department driven surveys to continue to improve.
  • Ensure participants meet all eligibility standards required by the Athletic Department and our athletic association, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Maintain working knowledge of UHSP Athletic Department Operations Guidelines, UHSP Student Athlete Handbook and Student Code, association and conference bylaws and rules pertaining to recruiting and eligibility standards for incoming and continuing student-athletes. Maintain knowledge of sport-specific rules.
  • Actively support player health and welfare and monitor student-athlete academic success; identify and refer to appropriate student support services.  
  • Ensure personal conduct standards are communicated and maintained.  Regulate and oversee team alignment with conduct, policies, procedures, and regulations to which the University belongs including the NAIA. Resolve any disciplinary issues and maintain an environment of sportsmanship, accountability and achievement.
  • Work in conjunction with Sports Information to develop material for social media platforms and other publicly viewed media.
  • Coordinate and confirm team travel arrangements and expense requests and reconciliation, responsible for team during team travel for competition.
  • Creation of an annual team budget for department approval; management of team purchases and record keeping. Generate budget-relieving funds for the team.
  • Supervise and manage all assistant coaches and other team support staff.
  • Attend department meetings and maintain regular office hours. Perform secondary duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Athletics and/or Assistant Vice President of Athletics. 

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in education, fitness and recreation, sports management, or exercise science
  • Demonstrated experience at the collegiate level of stunting, spotting, tumbling, cheerleading, choreography and mascot training. 
  • Ability to clearly articulate the role competitive cheerleading and sideline and spirit activities play in the holistic development of the student participant and recruit new students to the University.
  • Expert knowledge of sport safety standards in addition to USA Cheer rules and regulations
  • Strong commitment to the academic success of student-athletes
  • Exceptional leadership and strong organizational skills; professional, business, and leadership acumen
  • Excellent communication with players, recruits, and parents; understanding the demanding academic climate at UHSP; ability to assess student behavior/athletic ability; appropriate behavior befitting an empathetic authority figure in a university setting  
  • Superior communication skills and ability to appropriately use business and social media platforms as well knowledge of and access to standard business technology
  • Cheerleading Coach certification preferred. 
  • Knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations is preferred
  • Driver’s license and transportation for off-campus practice facilities
  • Ability to demonstrate necessary skills for the sport
  • Physical skills required to teach drills and demonstrate plays
  • Ability to transport or move necessary equipment for use at practices and games
