POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Forensic Lead Peer Advocate/Navigator will act as an Assistant to the Program Supervisor at the Neptune Respite. The Lead Peer Advocate/Navigator will provide coordination and oversight for the Forensic Peer Respite Program as needed.  Monitors the delivery and provision of high quality and effective services, through intensive case management services, community outreach and relationship building with other community-based organizations. Provides one-to-one support to residents including intake, assessment and linkages to services that increase a resident’s access to mental health services and maintenance of independence; facilitates groups, workshops, activities; provides feedback for Quality Assurance and strategic planning; work closely with Peer Specialists and program staff. The Forensic Lead Peer Advocate will coordinate linkages to support services that foster mental wellness, reintegration, and support the resident’s independence. The Peer Support Specialist aims to reduce further justice involvement through their work.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: 

Support Program Supervisor with Leadership Functions:

  • Maintenance of a coordinated delivery system for all program components; 
  • Delivery and provision of quality and effective services;
  • Operation within budget requirements;
  • Ensure that contractual goals and objectives are met;
  • Train new program staff;
  • Provide staff with guidance and assistance;
  • Provide in vivo (in the moment) training and service provision; 
  • Complete compliance reports as assigned; 
  • Support with training, workshops, and other activities for agency staff, which includes finding appropriate training sources, communication of expenses related to training, and coordination of trainings to ensure staff across shifts receive all needed training.
  • Utilizes motivational interviewing and other culturally appropriate evidence-based interventions
  • In the absence of the Peer Respite Program Supervisor, perform duties required to maintain the delivery of services, adequate staffing ratio, and respond to emergency situations

Peer Advocate Support:

  • Provide outreach, engagement, linkage, and follow-up services to participants 
  • Serve as role model and coach to inspire, engage, and advocate for participants and their family member’s or caregivers’ rights 
  • Utilize motivational interviewing and other evidence-based interventions 
  • Accompany participants to appointments and other services with the goal of coaching and promoting sustained independence over time 
  • Participate in weekly case management and peer review meetings, and monthly training sessions 
  • Provide referrals to other community-based providers 
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of the daily programming to promote empowerment, social interactions, the development of self-determination, and decrease future justice involvement
  • Running appropriate supportive groups including WRAP groups
  • Assist with housing chores and food prep
  • Provide complete and thorough documentation, e.g. progress notes, end of shift reports, recovery and reintegration plans, and any other documentation related to general flow of the respite.
  • Utilize a company computer to send and receive work-related electronic mail, and access and maintain electronic records and files. Responses shall be timely and in accordance with La Familia policies.
  • Maintain compliance with all quality improvement measures and County requirements. 
  • Collaborate with the team around assessments and individual case management plans for each resident. 
  • Assist residents with personal care errands including transporting residents to medical appointments, assisting them with purchasing groceries, and other appointments as needed. 

Other 

  • Attend trainings and participate in events relevant to key responsibilities
  • Track and regularly report on key metrics for responsible function areas
  • Leads and collaborate on special projects related to agency objectives as appropriate 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Mental Health Peer Support Specialist Certification is preferred. If you do not already have this certification, you will be required to complete the necessary training and obtain it within six (6) months of your hire date (training costs will be covered by La Familia). 
  • 2+years experience providing peer mentoring or coaching. 
  • Lived experience working with mental illness, homelessness, and/or substance use recovery. 
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is highly preferred.
  • Able to work the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 p.m. shift 
  • Personal lived experience of recovery from a behavioral or mental health challenge.
  • Residential experience is a plus, but not required
  • Experience working with adults of diverse cultural backgrounds 
  • Nonprofit orCommunity-Based Organization experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrates and models excellent customer service in interacting with people at all levels within and outside the agency.
  • Thinks independently and can make informed decisions when needed. 
  • Exercises extreme discretion to avoid unauthorized disclosures of PHI; with the ability to hold, balance and transmit public and confidential information needed by various parties.  
  • Proficient in using MS Office products, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Acquires or maintains proficiency in using Google Drive products, including Docs, Sheets, and Forms.
  • Valid CA Driver’s license
    • Auto insurance:  A personal vehicle may be used for business-related purposes; it is recommended you inform your auto insurance carrier.
