ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Summary/Objective:

The Health & Safety Manager (H&S Manager) is directly responsible for the overall evaluation, coordination, and administration of the health & safety function for the assigned area or region.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide H&S leadership for area or region staff, facilities, and other H&S Program representatives and champions as appropriate.
  2. Complete daily safety & health tasks required to support organization operations and compliance.
  3. Participate in developing EH&S program goals, objectives, and systems.
  4. Conduct facility and job site inspections for safety and environmental compliance as needed, assisting managers and other personnel in creating a safe and clean work environment.
  5. Communicate and/or meet with regulatory agencies to ensure we meet or exceed the requirements of compliance.
  6. Prepare and/or monitor regulatory reports including but not limited to VOSH, MSHA, DOT, OSHA, and EPA. Prepare and generate other reports and statistical data as needed.
  7. Assist with and/or conduct accident and incident investigations.
  8. Coordinate and/or report to public locations to clean-up concrete, hydraulic fluid, and other spills.
  9. Assist with coordination of health and industrial hygiene programs, assessments, and training.
  10. Coordinate random and post-accident drug and/or alcohol tests for employees.
  11. Prepare and process claims and reports while acting as liaison between insurance companies, doctor’s offices, customers/public, and company personnel.
    1. Workers Compensation claims
    2. Property and Accident claims
    3. Environmental issues and claims
    4. Windshield claims
  12. Assist with the coordination and communication of all return to work/light duty employees to the required personnel.
  13. Conduct new hire safety orientation and on-going safety training, MSHA Part 46 and OSHA.
  14. Ensure DOT files are kept current and well documented.
  15. Track DOT physical renewals and monitor completion.
  16. Maintain and update DOT and driver related changes in the HRIS system and any other required databases, i.e., driver license info, DOT expiration, accidents, incidents.
  17. Assist as needed with ensuring compliance with environmental regulatory agencies as well as internal environmental and compliance programs and requirements. Duties may include environmental inspections, sampling, audits, documentation, and recordkeeping.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

  1. Participate with the HR department in performing monthly site visits to all locations, including presence at Chaney Chats.
  2. Serve as a witness for managers during terminations.
  3. Forward employee complaints to management and the Human Resources department.
  4. Fill in as needed for colleagues.

Qualifications

Work Environment:

The Health & Safety Manager requires a lot of variability and flexibility in working within many different environments.

  • Work time will be split between indoors/office and outdoors/field.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes/offensive smells, and chemicals (fuel, concrete) in the field.
  • Close proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise level varies from low to loud depending on location, i.e., office to plant, respectively.
  • Various public sites and customer job sites as needed.

Physical Demands:

  • Lift a maximum weight of 30 lbs., carry between 5-30 lbs., push/pull between 5-30 lbs., reach overhead, and reach away from body.
  • Walk, stand, sit, kneel, squat, and climb between 1 to 12 hours a day, varying depending on the schedule of each day.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • 5-years’ experience in a similar skilled position.

Special Skills:

  • Written communication, verbal communication, and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to use a computer, including Microsoft Office with a focus on Word and Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of governmental agencies and regulations (MSHA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.).
  • Able to exhibit a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.

Certifications:

  • Environmental and safety courses (preferred)
  • CPR/First Aid (preferred)
  • OSHA Construction 10 AND OSHA Construction 30 (preferred)

Industry Related Experience or Skills:

  • Background in concrete, construction, transportation, environmental or safety (preferred)
