Summary
The Controller oversees the fiscal functions of the Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC) and its subsidiary, the Mizel Arts and Culture Center (MACC), both 501(c)3 organizations. They lead a team of professionals responsible for accounting and finance, providing essential financial data to management for policy and fiscal decisions, ensuring effective financial planning, operational efficiency and sound internal controls. The Controller is responsible for supplying management with all financial information necessary for making policy and fiscal decisions, operational efficiency, implementation and administration of sound internal controls and assists with effective financial management of the agency.  The Controller also enhances strategic leadership for the agency by implementing plans and policies.  The JCC is comprised of seven business centers, each with its own, unique operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct the preparation of financial reports, including statements of activities, financial position, reports to funding agencies, tax returns and reports for management, the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors, and others as needed.

 

  • Provide timely and accurate performance measurement and analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends to assist the CFO, CEO, the Board, and other senior management in performing their responsibilities.

 

  • Continually improve budgeting and forecasting processes through education of department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.

 

  • Optimize cash management: the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position. Oversee a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.

 

  • Coordinate annual examination performed by external auditors and oversee tax compliance functions.  Ensure successful annual audit by timely preparation of all PBC documents and supporting audit schedules, and timely issuance of financial statements to meet organizational deadlines.

 

  • Evaluate finance team’s structure, identifying opportunities for increased efficiency and effectiveness. Proactively implement changes to optimize workflow and enhance collaboration while fostering an environment that encourages professional and personal growth for team members.

 

  • Collaborate with CFO for fiscal excellence to plan, develop, organize, manage, and evaluate the organization’s fiscal functions and performance. Ensure the agency achieves annual budgeted goals while maintaining a focus on long-term sustainable growth.  Manage the team responsible for financial reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, banking, treasury functions, and accounting for grants and donations.

 

  • Participate in the development of the agency's plans and programs as a strategic partner.  Evaluates and advises on the impact of long-range planning and the introduction of new programs and strategies.

 

  • Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the agency.

 

  • Establish credibility throughout the organization and skillfully implement solutions to address business and economic challenges.

 

  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on issues affecting the organization (e.g., membership packages and pricing, employee benefits, capital investments, etc.).

 

  • Advise professional staff on financial implications of contracts into which the JCC may enter.

Qualifications

An experienced leader with 7+ years professional experience, including but not limited to not-for-profit organization. A forward-thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image. A strategic planner with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus. A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player, articulate and who possesses excellent communication skills required for effective interaction with all levels of staff and lay (volunteer) leadership. An educator who is trustworthy and willing to share information and serve as a mentor to fellow team members. A decisive individual who possesses a "big picture" perspective and is well versed in operational systems.

 

BA in accounting or related field required.

CPA preferred.

Experience with Financial Edge, Campminder, and Salesforce NPSP are preferred.

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.

 

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Physical demands: The position requires the incumbent to remain in the sitting position for prolonged hours. While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifteen (15) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: Working conditions may include being in an open (shared) cubicle/workspace area.

Benefits Overview

Full-Time employees of the JCC are considered benefits-eligible.

 

The JCC contributes a portion of medical, dental, and vision plan premiums. The JCC proudly pays for 100% of Basic Life Insurance, AD&D, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability coverage for benefits eligible employees. We also provide additional voluntary benefit plans.

 

The JCC has a 401(K) Plan available for elective deferral contributions for employees over 21 years of age with no waiting period. The JCC matches 50% of employee contributions, up to 3%, on a 5-year vesting schedule.

 

Paid Time Off is a day-one benefit, accrued based on years of service and in compliance with Colorado Health Families & Workplaces Act. First-year, benefits-eligible employees may accrue up to 120 hours of Paid Time Off in their first year of service. The JCC also provides paid-holidays and benefits-eligible employees are awarded up to 4 additional “Floating Holidays” per year, prorated based on date of hire.
