Why this role matters:
Camp Swim Instructors are responsible for instructing swim lessons in the pool, with the guidance of the Aquatics Director, to Lessans Camp JCC campers while actively supervising children within the guidelines set by the Bender JCC of Greater Washington. This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with our community and have a significant impact on the experience of our Lessans Camp JCC participants.

Core Responsibilities include:
Supervision and Engagement
- Supervise and engage with all participants (ages 4-21) in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
Leadership and Professional Development
- Teach instructional swim lessons using the American Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum.
- Teach staff and campers about expected behavior during pool time and appropriate use of equipment.
- Effectively motivate and delegate responsibilities to counselors.
- Demonstrate emerging leadership skills while assisting with leading the group.
Camper Care
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control, and use positive behavior-management techniques.
- Assist with managing concerns of assigned campers related to their social/emotional wellbeing.
Preparation, Planning, and Organization
- Combine efforts with other staff members to ensure programs and activities run smoothly.
- Assist in daily set up and clean-up of teaching areas and instructional equipment before campers arrive and at the end of the day.
Communication and Attendance
- Recognize, respond, and report to the Aquatics Director any environmental and/or other hazards.
- Complete Swimgen or equivalent source for each camper at the end of each session.
