SUMMARY
Reporting to a consulting actuary or senior consulting actuary, the senior data scientist works under the direction of an associate actuary, lead data scientist, consulting actuary, or senior consulting actuary to develop advanced analytics solutions. The senior data scientist will work to support client relationships in order to provide accurate information and feedback. The senior data scientist will communicate complex technical results of the advanced analytics analyses of a given problem into the format, language, and context appropriate for the decision-makers and other audiences for whom the results are relevant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Participate in the delivery of actuarial advanced analytics consulting projects
  • Participate in and show leadership during all phases of the development of advanced analytics projects including data preparation, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDAs), development of predictive models, and project documentation
  • Organize and input data accurately into statistical models; modify existing and create new statistical models; and/or create new code for unique data processing or changing predictive modeling assumptions demonstrating innovation and process improvement under the direction of a project manager
  • Complete technical review of data input into statistical models; review statistical models and/or data processing and predictive modeling code for technical accuracy
  • Recommend draft judgmental selections when appropriate in models
  • Format work correctly and professionally; ensure that work product is complete, correct and logical
  • Collaborate with consultants to complete assigned tasks
  • Prepare client ready exhibits and participate in client visits and calls as directed
  • Effectively communicate with project teams and manage internal expectations to ensure that projects are on time and meet Pinnacle standards for excellence
  • Communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors regarding day-to-day projects; effectively communicating while mentoring others
  • Suggest improvements to accuracy, efficiency, and/or quality of Pinnacle processes or work products to supervisor
  • Proactively request additional work and complete tasks with more independence
  • Lead and present at in-person internal meetings
  • Assist with training and development of staff
  • Author blog posts
  • Identify topics for and participate in advanced analytics research, including leading aspects of the work
  • May pursue the Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA) designation
  • Enter time and expenses accurately and timely
  • Handle and process confidential information with complete discretion
  • File projects and materials according to Pinnacle’s internal filing system
  • Regular, predictable and punctual attendance in a Pinnacle office when not working off-site

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may have supervisor responsibility including career development, coaching and mentoring direct reports.
 

Qualifications

COMPETENCIES

  • Advanced knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques
  • Ability to utilize mathematical and statistical knowledge combined with business knowledge to independently develop advanced analytics solutions for clients

  • Demonstrated ability to fully utilize statistical programming languages such as SAS, R, Python
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office software and additional software as needed

  • Ability to extract relevant information from proposals


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced degree in mathematics, statistics, data analytics, or related field of study from an accredited college or university•    
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one relevant statistical programming language preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one field of advanced analytics/predictive modeling such as advanced regression techniques, decision trees, random forests, unstructured data analysis, machine learning techniques, etc.
  • Minimum five years of advanced analytics/predictive modeling (data scientist) experience
     

The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus. The salary for this position is based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education and skills.
