Summer Group Leader 

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities. The Police Athletic League, together with NYPD and the law enforcement community, supports and inspires New York City youth to realize their full individual potential as productive members of society. 

 

We are looking for Summer Group Leaders who will be responsible for implementing programming tied to our summer theme.  Group Leaders plan and facilitate learning, recreational, arts and developmentally appropriate activities for youth, supervise field trips, and collaborate with all staff and leadership.  

 

The Commitment:

Able to work 8 hour days. 

Able to work the entire summer camp ( 4-8 weeks depending on the campsite) beginning June 30th (start date to be confirmed).  

Able to attend 15 hours of orientation prior to the beginning of Summer Camp.   

Able to attend scheduled staff meetings.  

Preference for professionals that can continue to work with PAL in the fall After School Programming.  

 

Major Duties & Responsibilities:  

Ensure that age-appropriate activities are implemented for youth in K-8th grades.  

At all times, ensure safety, structure, and learning.  

Provide supervision during summer field trips.  

Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, and behavior.  

Attend meetings with staff, parents, volunteers, and community residents as needed.  

Interact with parents and keep open lines of communication. 

  

Qualifications

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum High School Diploma / GED.   

  • Minimum of two years' work experience in a non-profit agency.  

  • Must be at least 18 years old. 

  • Experience working with youth. 

  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively. 

  • Ability to complete medical and DOHMH/DOE clearances and fingerprints including that an annual physical has been completed in the last year.   

  • Activity Specialists must show experience and competency in the material they would like to teach.   A sample lesson will be part of the interview process. 

Compensation: $17.00 Per Hour

Application and Onboarding Timeline:

February 1st: Summer Camp Application Opens (Rolling Admission) 

March 1st: Face-to-Face Interviews will begin 

Selected Candidates will be notified and scheduled for clearances 

May 20th: Last Day to submit Application (May be placed on waitlist) 

Mid-June: Trainings will begin for those who are cleared. 

June 30th: Start of Summer Camp for those who are cleared (start date to be confirmed).
