Activity Specialist

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities. The Police Athletic League, together with NYPD and the law enforcement community, supports and inspires New York City youth to realize their full individual potential as productive members of society.

 

We are looking for Activity Specialists who will be responsible for developing and implementing a broad range of specialties: dance, sports, STEM, leadership, performing arts, and visual arts.  Specialists will oversee their area of expertise while collaborating with all staff and leadership. 

 

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants by providing appropriate supervision at all times.
  2. Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all participants.
  3. Plan and implement meaningful activities and special events that are age-appropriate, exciting, and challenging.
  4. Teach participants the fundamentals of specialized activity to build their level of skill and confidence.
  5. Coordinate and present a culminating performance at the end of the program cycle, if applicable.
  6. Work cooperatively with Afterschool Counselors, professional staff, teachers, and other program and school staff.
  7. Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, and behavior.
  8. Attend meetings with staff, parents, volunteers, and community residents as needed.
  9. Interact with parents and keep open lines of communication.

 

 

The Commitment

Able to work 15 hours a week (3 hours a day, 5 days a week)

Able to attend 15 hours of orientation prior to the beginning of programming. 

Able to attend scheduled staff meetings.

Qualifications

Skills / Knowledge Required

  1. High School Diploma / GED. 

  1. be at least 18 years old.

  1. of two years work experience in a non-profit agency working with youth.

  1. Classroom management and behavior management skills.

  2. show experience and competency in the material they would like to teach.   A sample lesson will be part of the interview process.

  3. communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.

  1. to complete DOHMH/DOE clearances and fingerprints including that an annual physical has been completed in the last year.

Salary: 17:00 Per Hour

Location: Police Athletic League, Inc. New South Bronx Center

Selected Candidates will be notified and scheduled for clearances

Clearances can take 2-4 weeks to complete

DOHMH Centralized Trainings will begin for those who are cleared.

Onsite Orientation for those who are cleared.
