- Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
- Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
- Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers.
- Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge) and assigned work group.
- Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
- Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
- Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Former NS RWIC Qualifications:
- 20 years of experience with the last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as a RWIC.

Non-Former NS RWIC Required Education and Experience:
- 20 years of service as an RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
