Description

The Regional Public Safety Officer (RPSO) positions will provide an expanded public safety and law enforcement presence in rural areas and communities. RPSOs will provide oversight and training for the village public safety officer program and administer functions relating to protecting life and property in rural communities. RPSOs will conduct investigations, search and rescue missions, and provide local training programs in drug and alcohol awareness and prevention, water safety, and gun safety. RPSOs will also perform other duties relating to public safety as directed by the commissioner and or Regional VPSO Coordinator.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Enforce Alaska Statutes and Tribal Ordinances with due process.
  •  Assist local, state, and federal first responder agencies.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned VPSOs
  • Support VPSOs in all aspects of their duties.
  • Be a Field Training Officer to VPSOs.
  • Meet with local leadership on VPSO issues and report to the coordinator.
  • Support the establishment and operation of local volunteer fire departments.
  • Provide emergency fire and medical response, along with related education.
  • Coordinate and assist in search and rescue missions.
  • Aid VPSOs in incident reporting and community communications
  • Collaborate with Alaska State Trooper Support Officer and Director of Public Safety on critical incidents.
  • Assist in training and operating local Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
  • Assume that the command of VPSO staff is under the direction of the Incident Commander during emergency response, reporting directly to the IC.
  • Collaborate on establishing a productive work schedule in coordination with the Public Safety Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Certified as a VPSO, presently or within the last ten (10) years;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • EMS, search and rescue, emergency management, or firefighting.
  • Experience in or as Field Training Officer; Investigations; Methods of Instruction certified or instructor/teaching experience; Operating snowmachines, ATVs, or boats as applicable for the region.    

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a valid AK driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must meet VPSO minimum qualifications for citizenship, age, education, medical and mental fitness, and
  • Not denied or revoked VPSO or other law enforcement certification; and
  • Must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history check for convictions to meet 13 AAC 85.010 (2) standards. Could not have been convicted, during the ten (10) years immediately before the date of hire, of a crime of dishonesty or crime of moral turpitude, of a crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another person, or of two or more DUI offenses, by a civilian court of this state, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court.
