JOB DESCRIPTION
 

The Senior Director, Volunteer Engagement (“Sr. Director”) is a motivated leader focused on engagement partnerships, engagement oversight, project management and volunteer engagement initiatives.  The Sr. Director will report to the Chief Strategy and Impact Officer  and will support the Resource Development and Community Impact departments.

 

The Sr. Director will support the organization by leading design and development of the volunteer engagement offerings that provide both corporate and community volunteer opportunities. The Sr. Director will manage a team that plans, executes and evaluates all volunteer activities on behalf of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, ensuring best practices and support of volunteer engagement activities across the organization. The Sr. Director will participate in and support cross-functional organizational planning for activities projected to increase community and corporate donor engagement, enhance community and corporate volunteerism, and support diverse financial and asset development.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT 40%

  • Create annual volunteer engagement plan identifying monthly opportunities and themes that will support United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ Aspire 2030 goals, Community Impact partners and fulfill corporate volunteer engagement goals.
  • Develop strategic engagement opportunities and collaborate with UWMD Corporate Account Executives and all fundraisers to develop custom volunteer engagements for corporations, giving societies, or individual donors. Proactively develop volunteer engagement opportunities for the Resource Development team to support community and corporate fundraising.
  • Oversee and filter external engagement requests working cross-functionally with the Resource Development team to follow agreed upon stewardship plan for requests; troubleshoot any issues or outlines related to engagement planning. 
  • Lead community-wide volunteer projects, including UW Reading Day, STEM Fest, Stock the School, and Summer Meals Launch and develop overall project plans, coordinate event logistics, manage budget, oversee venue and vendors, coordinate promotions, set up and break down events,  and provide timely event analysis/follow-up.
  • Manage department budget and all project execution in a fiscally responsible way, by following internal control policies, including working with preferred vendors, soliciting in-kind partnerships and reducing pricing, and tracking and utilizing surplus supplies and materials for like-initiatives, etc.
  • Initiate, develop and strengthen relationships and collaborations with key partners, including but not limited to corporate and community partners, schools, nonprofit organizations, and Community Impact Grantees to ensure UWMD volunteer strategy is best in class and meeting internal and external needs.

 

TEAM MANAGEMENT  30%

  • Manage and develop the volunteer engagement team whose responsibilities are to plan and execute all volunteer projects both large scale and custom company specific projects. Make decisions on workload and project ownership, clearly communicating responsibilities with the team.
  • Provide strategic direction to the coordinators on their project plans, project implementation and coordination of their owned projects.
  • Oversee inventory of engagement and volunteer project materials and supplies. Delegate organization, ordering and up-keep of materials to team as needed.

 

DEVELOPMENT/SALES 20%

  • Execute new business strategy relationships with new and existing partners and take accountability of set business development goals.
  • Partner with the Resource Development team to develop a sponsorship pipeline for volunteer engagement; and support the Resource Development team in revenue generation.
  • Own fulfillment of sponsorship assets for volunteer engagements. Coordinate across RD, Marketing and Community Impact on all benefits to ensure full execution. Communicate closely with sponsors pre and post event.
  • Ensure UWMD and custom projects meet external and internal team customer needs and deadlines.

 

GENERAL OPERATIONS 10%

  • Collaborate across all UWMD departments to streamline development and project planning for volunteer activations. Develop best in class project implementation (communication, budgeting, vendor management, partner management, Impact area engagement) offering consistent volunteer experiences for both internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • A bachelor’s degree preferred, or commensurate experience accepted.
  • A minimum of ten years of work experience, preferably in volunteer engagement, marketing or event/program planning and execution.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit and/or in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Interest in and ability to cultivate community-wide partnerships and new relationships through external meetings and planning sessions.
  • A high degree of personal initiative with the desire and ability to meet aggressive goals.
  • Ability to work independently, to prioritize and execute multiple projects and meet strict deadlines for deliverables.
  • Ability and willingness to communicate with several individuals per day via several mediums
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to infuse creativity, innovation, and insight into proposal development.
  • A strong commitment to community service and the nonprofit sector.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel; working knowledge of social media.

 

ADDITIONAL

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as required by event timing.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
