JOB TITLE: Education Coordinator/Tutor

DEPARTMENT: Child Care

REPORTS TO: Resident Director

JOB SUMMARY:

The basic responsibilities of the Education Coordinator/Tutor concentrates on the residents performance in school. These include enrolling the residents, receiving and returning school correspondence, teacher-tutor conferences, attendance matters, receiving and evaluation of report cards, expediting and participating in staffing for the placements of residents in special programs, transporting students in some situations, conferring with and informing staff concerning student progress.

In working directly with students, the Education Coordinator/Tutor schedules and conducts tutoring sessions as needed, is primarily responsible for choosing and gathering educational materials and acts as a resource person.

It is the responsibly of the Education coordinator/Tutor to make every attempt to see that all children at Cherokee Estate succeed educationally within their limits and capabilities. He or she should be aware of each childs status on a day to day and weekly basis. This should be accomplished through progress reports, conferences with teachers, conferences with staff and conferences with the child/

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enrolls (and applies for free lunch) and withdrawal of students.
  • Coordinates students schedules (maintain copy of all student schedules) know what courses the high school students need to take to meet graduation requirements.
  • Issues school supplies to residents. Obtains materials students need for projects.
  • Initiates teacher conferences, have at least one per grading period and document for file. Communicates to the teachers that Cherokee Estate wants to help their youth succeed.
  • Attends all IEP meetings.
  • Be visible in all schools Cherokee Estate Children attend. Get to know key people at the schools, enrollment center and the central office.
  • Publish a weekly tutoring schedule.
  • Tutor residents after school.
  • Maintain copies of each progress and report card.
  • Plan a campus wide Strength Rally and issue grade restrictions.
  • Field Trip forms sign and coordinate money.
  • Juniors/Seniors help with SAT, ACT registration, ordering class rings, cap & gown, invitations, thank you notes, souvenirs.
  • Attend open houses and parent nights at all of the schools the children attend.
  • Summer School registration
  • Coordinate arrangements between students, teachers and houseparents for students needing extra help in class.
  • Be sure the school administrators, teachers and office personnel have a way to contact you in case of illness, discipline problems, or other issues. It is part of the Educational Coordinators job to assure the schools that education is important to Cherokee Estate and they will support the school in any way possible.
  • Keep Cherokee Estate staff and houseparents informed of school activities ex. Dances, school holidays, school closings, etc.
  • Keep tract of grades and attendance using Infinite Campus.
  • Summer enrichment program for all residents (discuss potential topics with RD).
  • Keep records of all the children

Qualifications

  • KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
    • Experience in developing curriculum
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Group leadership skills including an understanding of group dynamics.
    • Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities.
    • Must have clean driving record, criminal record and valid drivers license.
    • Must be willing to travel/transport residents.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • Bachelors degree in education or Education related field from an accredited college or university

 

  • PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    • Documentation from a licensed physician or a public health service attesting to the health of the person.
    • The following physical requirements are necessary in order to meet the physical demands of the job:
      • Must be able to drive a vehicle.
      • Must be mobile; able to walk, stand, lift (up to 30 lbs.), carry, reach, climb and stoop.
      • Must be physically able to drive children to and from school function and other activities. Must be physically active enough to attend these functions with children.
      • In case of a medical emergency involving child, staff must be able to physically lit or move the child, physically able to perform CPR and First Aid.
      • Employee must be able to talk and hear.
