ASSISTANT EDITOR
The assistant/copy/content editor shall proofread and edit copy for grammatical and spelling errors and bring to the attention of the desk editors and managing editor any material that might be libelous or otherwise questionable. Key aspects of the job include checking facts in articles, shooting photographs, writing stories as needed by the editor or managing editor, and working with writers enrolled and not enrolled in media writing classes. This position is required to work 8 hours a week
Distinguishing features of the job
The assistant/copy/content editor must be able to:
• Edit copy to meet requirements in The Critograph Style Manual and the Associated Press Stylebook;
• Correct spelling and grammatical errors in copy;
• Correct words that sound the same, but have different meanings, i.e., insure and ensure;
• Ensure that names are spelled correctly by using an area telephone book (if applicable) or checking with the desk editor or staff writer;
• Eliminate spelling, grammatical, and/or other errors in headlines and cutlines;
• Ensure headlines and cutlines follow guidelines set in The Critograph Style Manual ;
• Note any questions or comments about the copy for the desk editor and managing editor;
• Attend all editorial board meetings as a voting member;
• Be accountable to the managing editor.
