JOB SUMMARY

 

Reports directly to the Director of Athletics or Designee (Deputy Athletic Director/SWA) and is responsible for coaching and managing all aspects of respective sport.

 

CLASSIFICATION

 

This position is classified as full time, regular.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Carry out all aspects of the respective program necessary to accomplish the objectives of the sport within the University, the Department of Athletics, and NCAA and conference rules and regulations;

  • Recruit and retain highly skilled NCAA DII student-athletes for the respective sport;

  • Develop, monitor, and manage programs annual budget;

  • Orient and enforce adherence by student-athletes and assistant coaches to the policies and procedures of the University, Department of Athletics, NCAA, and conference;

  • Oversee conduct and discipline of student-athletes;

  • Develop and oversee a marketing plan for respective sport;

  • Organize and conduct team practices to include strength and conditioning and coaches games;

  • Counsel student-athletes in sport participation and personal development;

  • Raise private funds for respective sport and assist other sports in marketing, promotion and developmental services;

  • Work closely with Admissions and Financial Aid in recruitment of student-athletes;

  • Select, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches and other support personnel.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Perform other functions and duties as may be requested by the Vice President for Athletics and the Deputy Athletic Director.

 

  • Monitor and encourage academic progress of student-athletes;

  • Perform and coordinate routine maintenance of respective playing surface;

  • Drive student-athletes to team activities or coordinate transportation accordingly;

  • Represent the Department of Athletics on Various University committees;

  • Teach in the Department of Sports Studies and Physical Education as assigned by the Department Chair;

  • Travel overnight when required;

  • Work nights and week-ends during the season and when necessary.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

The incumbent must possess specific areas of knowledge and skill to perform the following:

  • Ability to understand NCAA regulations and guidelines;

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community;

  • Ability to communicate, both written and orally;

  • Ability to recruit skilled players within the respective sport;

  • Ability to counsel student-athletes on requirements for personal conduct, academic performance and athletic participation to include good sportsmanship;

  • Ability to teach fundamentals of the respective sport;

  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports, particularly budget data for respective sport;

  • Ability to make administrative procedural decisions and judgements;

  • Ability to foster a cooperative environment;

  • Ability to multi-task.

 

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

 

An incumbents ability to perform the duties of this description, in a timely, accurate, and otherwise positive manner, is the basis for performance appraisals. Proper discharge of duties will be measured in part by the quality of work performed, the ability to work with other employees, and a demonstrated commitment to fulfilling the mission, purpose, and goals of Chowan University.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

 

  1. Bachelors Degree required (Masters preferred)
  2. Over 3 years experience as a head coach or 6 years as an assistant preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to analyze players proficiency.
  4. Ability to handle multiple tasks unsupervised.
  5. Demonstrated ability to instruct players either individually or in groups.
