About the Role
The Manager, Digital Manufacturing plays a key role in advancing automation and robotics training to support local industry. This position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Center for Manufacturing Advancement's Industry 4.0 lab, fostering industry relationships, and leading projects that drive manufacturing modernization. The Manager will collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of advanced manufacturing initiatives, from planning through evaluation, while delivering impactful training opportunities that align with the needs of the manufacturing sector.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops industry relationships and serves on appropriate Committees  
  • Develops effective communication strategies to manage projects across multiple regions.
  • Ensures that project goals are met and develops strategies for remedial actions, as necessary 
  • Ensures proper and timely collection of data from the participating partners. Provides reports to leadership and grant and contract awarding bodies as requested 
  • Ensures compliance with requirements and adherence to program guidelines, program contracts and/or regulatory standards
  • Partners with other staff to provide training opportunities to local industry
  • Facilitates training opportunities for local industry for manufacturing improvements and modernization
  • Manages projects from conception to implementation and evaluation
  • Participates in professional development activities related to the advanced manufacturing initiatives
  • Executes the terms of grants and contracts and ensures strategic program execution of advanced manufacturing projects 
  • Interacts within IALR and with outside stakeholders, including industry and educational partners, prospective industry and clients, local and regional economic developers, state and federal government entities, and grant and contract stakeholders
  • Performs other related duties as required

 

Work Location
We are looking for staff to work onsite in Danville, VA.   

The Ideal Candidate

  • Associate's degree in Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology or a similar discipline is required.
  • FANUC Robotics Certification is preferred.  Candidates with other Robotics Certifications from Yaskawa or Universal Robotics are also accepted.  Candidates without a Robotics Certification must be willing to obtain a certification in one-year.
  • Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing experience that includes robotics, automation, and process control
  • Experience with fiscal management required
  • Must have experience with advanced programming techniques, specifically the Allen Bradley PLC Technology
  • Experience with mobile industrial robotics preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to communicate both orally and written is required 
  • Ability to speak well in public settings
  • Ability to process vague, abstract verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work under stress, interruptions, and tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated project management ability, serving in a leadership role on a project(s) of similar scope
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain strategic partnerships 
  • Must be able to work independently and make well-informed decisions with an understanding of initiative-wide and statewide implications
  • Must possess the ability to lead others and meet deadlines effectively. 
  • Knowledge of and experience with experience in workforce training
  • The ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to work independently, as well as work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel throughout Southern Virginia as well as occasional out-of-state trips

 

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a desk using a computer for documentation, audits, and reporting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent standing and walking within office areas and operational spaces, such as labs or manufacturing areas, during audits and inspections.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach when accessing files, equipment, or documentation storage.
  • Visual acuity for detailed document review, data analysis, and quality inspections.
  • Manual dexterity for handling documents, using quality measurement tools, and data entry.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication for conducting training, leading audits, and reporting findings.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for external supplier audits and evaluations, with the ability to drive or use other forms of transportation as needed.

 

Salary & Benefits
IALR will offer a salary of $80,000 - $90,000 plus applicable shift differential.
